Dear Flowers:

Lets see I think I’m getting a crush on Roberto. He is new in our class & goes around with Alejandro Hibbert. Wish me luck. We had assembly & I missed Science & a bit of Math. They showed a movie on smoking. They showed a guy with lung cancer being operated the cutting opening, taking the lung out to sewing the guy up. I went to the skin Dr. with mom. No homework today. Watched T.V. Lola’s back. Mom and Dad are bowling at C.C.

BYE!!!

Note: I doubt the movie deterred kids from smoking but maybe it did. When I turned 13, my Dad gave David and me a cigarette. He said if we were going to try one, do it now. He lit it and of course I took a big inhale and nearly died coughing. Needless to say, I never touched a cigarette again. I know now he was using reverse psychology on us. It could have backfired!

Dear Flowers:

Fri. at last!!! I worked in the library last period. Let’s see. I invited Pat to go swimming at the C.C. We had fun. Talked to Olgita Vann for awhile. Mark, Larry, Conrad & Camarota came to the C.C. Larry & Camarota came in for about 8 min & then left. Pat & I were mad. David & I are going to Diana Ansteads party. Pray that we have fun.

BYE!

Note: I don’t remember who Larry, Conrad, or Camarota were. I think Mark was Mark Burgess. The country club was a fun place to hang out. I love how I said they came in for about 8 mins, not 5 or 10 minutes.

Michelle Burgess Collins contacted me with the missing names: Larry Ward, Armand Cammarota and Conrad Lopez. Thank you Michelle!

Dear Flowers:

The party was rotten. 1st we couldn’t find the house so we went all over Bolonia. When we got there noone but David asked me to dance. If it wasn’t for David I would have left right away! This morning we got up early (7:00) & went to get our blood test. 5 injections of taking out blood. They gave us glucose to drink & each half hour & the 1 hr, they would take out blood. We were there to 11:00. Mom treated us to Banana Splits. None of us are Diabetics!!! Injection no duelen. Went to church. Finished Mixed up Files.

BYE!!!

Note: I am lucky to have a sweet brother.

no duelen means they don't hurt.

Dad had recently found out that he was diabetic. His doctor said that 2 out of 3 of his children would be diabetics so we all three had to take the glucose intolerance test, which consisted of drinking this yucky syrupy glucose and then having blood extracted over a period of two hours. Fortunately, our tests were negative. It’s ironic that Mom then treated us to banana splits.

Reflecting, this was her way of trying to make things better - her love language.

Right after I had Wesley, my parents came to visit. He was losing weight and there was the fear of “failure to thrive.” David had just been to the doctor and found out that he might have the Chagas infection and I needed to be tested as it can lay dormant for 10 -20 years. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chagas-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20356212

It was a stressful time; my blood work had to be tested by infectious disease center in Atlanta. I was terrified that I was killing my sweet baby. Fortunately, I tested negative and David tested a false positive. Mom went out and bought me another huge banana split. Soon after, Wesley started gaining weight. Now I know why banana splits are one of my comfort foods!

Do you all have a comfort food?

Larry Ward! I still remember the time he got on the bus stinking drunk and was throwing up out the window! When we got to school the principal through him in the back seat of his car and drove him back home!

Was it principal Burton that drove him home?

You can really tell that's Wesley even as a baby! I thought that was sweet ( no pun intended) of your mom getting banana splits for you- food does comfort us at times. My comfort food is an English Muffin with Peter Pan creamy , sugar/cinnamon , Crock spread on top and microwaved 15 sec! I also love this on rice cakes and tortilla - peanut butter burrito! My daughter and grans love that too! Inspired, I made Choc No Bake cookies today despite TN loss in SEC championship, at least they were in the final and lost in single not double digits! Diabetes is no fun - an everyday care giver task to check on loved ones ( m…

It was a sad loss for TN but they played hard. I do love English muffins with crunchy peanut butter and sliced bananas.

You are right, diabetes is not fun. I watched my Dad suffer with it. I am grateful not to have it.

Roberto was cute!

Yes, Susie the CC was a great place to hang out - at one point the school bus would drop us off there - later Mom would pick us up. Do you remember the Frank Lloyd Wright house on the way to the CC?

As you know my Dad manufactured cigarettes and at about thirteen I too was given the chance to try smoking - same deal as you, I never wanted another one! Very effective...

My comfort food was enchiladas - when my tonsils were removed that was all I wanted to eat but they were too picoso! To this day Enchiladas Verdes can make me very happy.

Glad you did not have diabetes, banana split perfect treat! Tootsie

I don't remember Frank Lloyd Wright's house. I did a quick search and didn't find it. Would love to see a picture as at the time his houses were not on my radar.

Our parents were smart! Using reverse psychology on us.

I love enchiladas verdes and enchiladas suizas.

Thanks for your comments!

I loved your dad!! He always treated us as special people! When he put me in first class to go and get my mom in Panama after a surgery, I knew how much he cared for us!! It was always scary when we had to have blood tests and treated for "possible" diseases. I wasn't there for very long, but I remember so many people and wonder where they are today!!!

Thank you for your kind words about my Dad. It always great to hear special things he did. He had a big heart! Yes, it was always scary getting blood test and the possibility of parasite, malaria etc. Where are you now?

Charles was her younger brother. Diana was at least a grade ahead of me. I wonder where they ended up?
