December 29, 1972 Fri.
Dear Flowers:
I watched some T.V. & then went to the bank with Mom & Mr. Tinder to put our valuables in a safety deposit. The rest of the day I watched T.V. & read magazines. I washed my hair. Watched Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, & Room 222 in color! Saw News reels on Nic.
BYE!!!
Note: Mom must have felt relieved having all the valuables in a safe deposit box.
It was so exciting to watch all these shows in color. I always enjoyed Room 222 for its portrayal of high school life, never dreaming I would teach in one myself. At that time, I never wanted to be a teacher. I planned to study International Relations and enter the Foreign Service.

Dear Flowers:
This yr. flew by. Got up late. Sewed some on my new Xmas pants (hem, buttons tightoned). Read newspaper & mag. At 2:00 we went across the St. to the Tinders neighbor to swim. Water was 70° ice. I’ve never been in such a cold pool. We watched the “Orange Bowl”. Saw Carol Burnet show Got to get up early for Mass tomorrow. A Big awful crash last night 171 passangers 80 survived.
Gross!!
BYE!!!
Note: Mrs. Tinder taught me some new sewing techniques.
The game we watched was probably the Gator Bowl, as the Orange Bowl wasn’t played until New Year’s Day. The Auburn Tigers defeated the Colorado Buffaloes 24-3 in Jacksonville, Florida.
The airline crash was Eastern Air Lines Flight 401, scheduled to fly from New York to Miami. It ended tragically in the Florida Everglades, spurring major safety changes in the aviation industry.

Dear Flowers:
Well this has been a pretty good yr. but I hope next one is better & more promises. We went to Mass. Ate lunch. Mrs. Brown (Tinder’s sister-in-law) loaned us bikes so we rode most of the afternoon. Watched T.V. Dad sent our coats up so we might go to Cleveland. I doubt if I’ll last awake till 12:00. I bushed & my butt aches!!! Thanks for everything Flowers & wish me a happy new yr. Take care of my Dad & all of us.
Love Susie
BYE!!!
Note: I like being an optimist.
It was nice of Mrs. Brown to loan us bikes. My bicycle had a banana seat, so I had a sore butt that night, not used to riding on a standard seat.
I thought of my diary, Flowers, as a friend and a safe haven for my thoughts.
Goodbye, 1972, and goodbye, Flowers. 1973 promises to be a year filled with new adventures. It will have a new diary with a new name.

Your Dad's ID: I always got a kick out of Latin American "Officialdom"; ID's and licenses with flourishing signatures and elaborate stamps. My old passport from the 60's is a work of art in the "Visas" section.
Eastern Flt 401: Got a couple of books on it. You're right, many changes resulted, especially concerning CRM (Crew Resource Management). All 3 crewmembers were distracted trying to troubleshoot a tiny 50 cent light bulb, leaving nobody to monitor the flight path. As usual, enough holes in the cheese lined up (google "swiss cheese model") to cause a disaster.
If it was a true "banana seat", then you were riding one of the still popular "wheelie" bikes of the era; the famous Schwinn…
Churchill said, “ I am an optimist. It doesn’t seem much use being anything else.” I think we both agree.
