Destroyed high school after quake

 high school before quake

January 10, 1973, Wed.

Dear Smiley:

Dad called this morn & gave us real good news. We can go back to Nic. at the end of Jan. School is going to reopen. Today is my Good-luck day. I got a letter from Missy. She sent me a picture of herself & a pair of neato earring. Becky got a pair too. Watched T.V. Becky & I stayed up for the late movie “Westward the Women.” Earlier I watched “Tammy & the Doctor.” Spaghetti for supper.

BYE!!!

Thanks for todo.

Note: I love Good-luck days: good news about school, earrings from Missy, and spaghetti for dinner. It seems like good or bad things come in threes!

It’s weird, but for the last few weeks I’ve had the song “Tammy’s in Love” stuck in my head. Not from this movie, but from Tammy and the Bachelor, sung by Debbie Reynolds.

Todo means all or everything.

Dear Smiley:

Got up late as usual. Cold outside so we didn’t go outside. We haven’t gone outside since Sun. Dad called; he has a strached cornea. Mr. Ossi called. School starts Jan. 29. Watched T.V. Beck has a cold. Aunt Helen came over & so did Uncle Norm. Got a letter from Missy. Aunt Helen brought her electric curlers so I tried them. There GROOVY!!!

BYE!!!

Note: My Dad must have gotten his ham radio working so he could call us. There was a lot of debris and dust all around; easy to see how my Dad got a scratched cornea.

Mr. Ed Ossi worked for Texaco and was on the school board.

Wonderful to have a date to return home.

What fun to try out electric curlers!

January 12, 1973, Fri.

Dear Smiley:

Let’s see. Got up late. Took a bath. Watched T.V. I’m sorta getting sick of T.V. Mom talked to Dad this morning. No more country club. Watched T.V. in the afternoon. After we finished supper, we went to Uncle Bills store. I got a jar of Noxema skin cream. I hope this fixes my face. Then we went to Aunt Liz’s & Uncle Nick's. Tom was home. He’s handsome.

BYE!!!

Note: Uncle Bill was a discount chain store in Cleveland. I still occasionally use Noxema as I love how it makes my skin tingle. It is especially great after a sunburn, which I avoid at all costs now.

Aunt Liz was my grandfather’s baby sister, and Tom was her middle son. He became a police officer and was much older than me.

Enjoyed reading your 'cool' lingo - 'neato' , 'groovy' ! I try to use some of what's in use now, but I don't always have the 411 right or its already run it's fad course! I think "cool" is still good, though! I love to watch TV and have many listings on our streaming services, so I don't think I would ever get tired of watching TV. There are times though, that I just want it quiet. I do like to do a craft late at night and there's just silence. I'm curious about the school year schedule - the year of the earthquake was a change in schedule, I'm sure, but normally did you go from Feb…

My goodness - had not seen the picture of ANS being demolished! Did the Country Club, get pancaked too? Can only imagine how happy you were to go back home regardless of the condition!

On the Noxzema front - never had any of my own - we could not buy at the Commissary, but wanted to try it! Tootsie

The pic of the high school building was after demolition. No matter because it Stijl wound not have been usable anyway because earthquake pancaked it somewhat. And yes… school went to two shifts, with middle and high school in the afternoon… and many classes were in GP Medium (Army) tents

It was pretty miserable. Many times we ended up moving under large trees.

Wow! The school didn't fare too well, from the photo. If you were to return Jan 29, I can't imagine anything more than tents to accommodate y'all, or maybe pre-fab classrooms of some sort. Guess we'll find out in subsequent posts.

Everything was "Groovy" in those days....we thought it was one of "our" generation's terms, but come find out, it goes back to the jazz & dance scene of the 40's. Oh, well...

Had to look up "Tammy's in Love" , then I instantly remembered it, catchy tune, so now I've got the ear bug!

I love how you write about the missing Nicaragua. I have wanted to go there. Have you been back there?
