My Dad with his ham radio
My Dad with his ham radio

July 23, 1972 Sun.

Dear Flowers:

We went to church & after to the super. They have a new shopping center near the supermarket. I watched T.V. In the afternoon I tried some clothes on. Read alot on “Those Endearing Young Charms” We had a guest over for a radio patch & for supper. He’s from Quito a friend of Dad’s. Watched T.V. David’s not feeling well. Mom & Dad are taking him home right now.

BYE!!

Note: My Dad was an amateur ham radio operator. This is how we communicated with our family in the U.S. as making a long distance phone call was difficult and very expensive. We often had people coming over for Dad to make calls for them. My Dad had connections all over the world. I recently found his collection of his QSL cards which are similar to postcards and exchanged between operators.

Dear Flowers:

Well I didn’t get up to 10:30. I had real weird dreams last night. Moms not feeling well. I went to the C.C. today. Karron & Sarah were there. Well I showed them around. I wore my bikini. Wade in the baby pool. Carmen & Lane were there. After Sarah & Karron left I met some nice girls. Americans from Illinois. One wears her contacts while swimming. I couldn’t believe it. Oh well seem it all had fun. Thanks everyone that helped that be possible. Watched T.V.

BYE!!

Note: We had a virus going around the family, Becky first, then David, and now Mom.

I never swam with my contacts on as i was fearful of losing them. In the 70’s, hard contacts were the norm and were uncomfortable and expensive, but vanity won out. They popped out easily - or at least mine did. I now wear soft contact lenses that I don’t even feel.

Diary July 23-24, 1972

July 25, 1972 Tues.

Dear Flowers:

I got up at 10:30. Ate breakfast; & read newspapers. Dad left to Costa Rica on business. We Becky & I had tennis lessons. We learned how to double. Seehafeir (Steve) played with us on Becky’s side & I was with Ricardo. We won. Afterwards we went swimming. Mom played golf with Dave. I met this guy American & named David. His Dad works for PanAm too but in Los Angelos. We talked for about an hr. I learned all about sharks & Scuba diving. Watched T.V.  Talked to  Simmon. Pray that Dad has safe trip. Becky sleeps with Mom.

BYE!!!

Note: Ricardo was our tennis instructor and I learned a lot from him. I had a mean backhand being left handed. I enjoyed learning to play doubles and I especially liked winning!

I was always fearful of my Dad dying in an airplane crash or of a heart attack. I inherited the Hughes’ worry gene. Fortunately the things we worry the most about rarely happen. It’s the things we least expect that blindside us. Dad died in 2009 at the age of 81. We had many good years together and I miss him dearly.

In the 60's, we rarely made phone calls to the states, as it was a hit or miss proposition....it had to go thru at least one operator, and we always wondered if they were listening in. There was often a delay echo on the line which made conversation difficult. Our mom would limit us kids to less than a minute each when talking to our grandmother.

Living the summer life - sleeping in, reading, swimming, playing tennis, chatting. That was nice of your dad to make ham radio calls for others - I'm sure they appreciated that! Hope you didn't get the virus too !

Who were you thanking for making what possible? The contact makers?

You don’t seem like a worrier to me! You are such a positive person. I’m glad you got to spend many loving years with your dad.

I work hard now not to be a worrier and take things as they come. Thank you for your comments.
