Mr. Hernan Vallecillo
Business Teacher

March 8, 1973 Thurs.

Dear Smiley:

No homework today!!! I slept in.Went on bus. We had fun. We waved at this guy & he waved back etc. Mr. Vallecio goes Break it up! School was fine. I don’t get much done in Math cause Bill, Julio & I all just talk. On the ride home Leesa was throwing eggs out the window at people (eggs raw from science experiment.) We went to Hingst & then to TipTop.

BYE!!!

Note: Mr. Vallecillo rode the bus with us in the morning. I guess no adults were around in the afternoon during the egg-throwing.

I loved eating at TipTop! They had the best chicken!

Dear Smiley;

Fri. at last!!! Studied for English. On the bus today one of the little girls lost her little shoe so on her stop for her to get off we had to look & find it!!! Nothing to new in school. English test so-so Watched T.V. Went out tonight. It was fun. I met quite a few new people. I’m getting there. Watch now we will be transferred. I got a letter from Missy & TEEN mag.

BYE!!!

Note: I loved that we helped the little girl find her shoe. I am glad to be stepping out of my comfort zone and meeting new people in our neighborhood.

The TEEN cover model, Karen Umphrey, was a successful teen model who gave up modeling at age twenty and moved to Australia to raise a family. Do any of you remember her?

Dear Smiley:

I slept to 11:00 I talked to Doris. Ate lunch. I went to the farmacia. Beck & I went to Simones house. On the way home Blanca & Olga were sitting & called us over. Alvaro Manchado came & others. I didn’t understand the conversation to much but it was ok. Did math & History homework. Went out after supper & played a bit. Jorge Norguera gets me fuming!!!

BYE!!

Note: I guess the neighborhood kids were talking about past history. I don’t remember Jorge, so I am not sure why he made me so mad.

March 8, 1973 Thurs. (David’s Diary)

It’s 10:30 and I went to sleep early so that I can study for geography. Today was regular I guess except for on the way back. We brought home our egg experiments (now rotten) and threw them out the window. Leesa threw them. The first one missed but the second one hit a man on the leg. Went to Hingst. Bart and HIng (sp?) against Doug and me. We won 50 to 22. We went to TipTop and I couldn’t study. David has grown a lot. When will I sprout up! I’m only 5’2” tall and I’m 14!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good night. It’s ten 35.

Note:  I wonder if Leesa remembers her egg toss!

March, 9, 1973, Friday (David’s Diary)

Hi Snoop,
I mixed up pages. Today was lousy. School was lousy. I feel lousy. I played reg basketball. Missed easy shots and flunked a geography test. Math I couldn’t understand correctly. Shit Shit Shit Shit!!!!! Alas, I did good in Spanish. Today’s game at night was bad. I couldn’t run really. My feet hurt. I’ve been wondering  what I’ll be when I grow up. A pilot, teacher, accountant, business, what?
Tomorrow’s the hike. My feet hurt and I feel fat. Hike’s at 8:00 so I’ll get up at 7:00.
You know Mr. Hooker gave the hardest test of the century.
Sleep in peace and wake up at 7:00 . Remind me snoop. GOOD NIGHT

Note: I don’t think I knew about careers in science, especially physics. I knew I liked math so that’s why I considered teaching or accounting. It wasn’t until my senior year that I got hooked with physics.

Dear Snoop,
Today was mostly fun and adventure. At 7:00 I got up and at 8:00 went to school for the hike. We went to Santiago and hiked up it. Oh my feet. When we got there we ate and later hiked on. We were going to go down a dormant volcano but we needed a rope. By the way, on the way down a steep gravel hill I feel and did I get scratched. I had two cokes (at diff times) and walked home from school. I was in a bad mood tonight. My foot hurts.
I played cops and robbers and I played lousy. Tavi is creído. I have a headache. Tomorrow I get shoes and I’m going to start my science report. I’m worried about school.
Good night.
I’m not running so fast.

Note: I remember the volcano hike. Santiago volcano is actually not that dormant! I’m glad we didn’t drop in. See photos above. It looks like my new shoes were a day too late!
Creído translates to conceited. Tavi was my closest neighborhood friend.

Had Vallecillo for special Spanish all three years. It was kind of like a "sweathogs" class from "Welcome Back Cotter"

I forgot he taught special Spanish. I remember him teaching "bachillerato" or business classes.

Our egg-toss equivalent in C.R. in Junior High were the so-called "stink bombs". I say "so-called" because I'd never actually seen one, but they were talked about a lot, and were referenced in Mad magazine of the day. Supposedly a mixture of egg yolk and Sulphur in a small sealed glass vial, I eventually wrote it off as an Urban Legend. Years later, back in the States, I noticed a store in the mall called "Spencer's Gifts" sold them. Half the stuff that store sold back then (late 70's) is probably outlawed now. 😑

Wow, good to know. You're probably right about Spencer's Gift items being outlawed today! They had a lot of prank toys, if I remember correctly.
