Me and Missy
Me and Missy

May 6, 1972 Sat.

Dear Diary:

Woke up at around 10:00. Aircondition man had to check Missy’s aircondition. We talked. We made our own breakfast. Hard boiled eggs smashed with butter & pepper. We talked. Mom picked me up at 12:00. I read on a book she loaned me. “Kerry” by Grace Livingston. Becky’s back. Mom & Dad are at a wedding. I’m hoping to have a despedida party for Missy. Hope she accepts. Probably not. Watched T.V.

BYE!!

Note: Missy calls her eggs Eggie Weggies. She boils the eggs for 11 minutes, peels them and them smashes them with butter, salt and pepper. I made them for breakfast today and they were yummy on buttered toast.

None of the homes at this time had central air conditioning. Bedrooms had a small wall unit if you were lucky. Our school did not have air conditioning so we went from 7:30-12:30 to beat the heat. We had paned windows in the high school and I don’t remember ceiling fans. It would get really hot. Sometimes at recess we would sneak raw eggs from home and compete to see whose egg would fry up fastest on the hot pavement.

Despedida party is a going away party.

Dear Diary:

We kids went to mass. We went to the country club. We David, Becky & I played tennis. After tennis we went swimming. Kim was there. Luckly he didn’t see me in a bathing suit. Armijos boy just stared at me & came over & talked to David & stared at me. Mom & Dad went to the buffe. We stayed downstairs. The Vahn boys were there. They talked to me. Their really nice. Rest of family went to Trost. I stayed home & did a report. I watched T.V. Talked to Missy.

BYE!

Note: I remember my bathing suit at that time being a one piece but I sure was self-conscious. I’m still not very confident in a bathing suit but I do love to swim!

My parents were good friends with Colonel Trost and Mrs. Trost. Mrs. Trost introduced me to Almond Roca which is still one of my favorite candies but hard to find.

Dear Diary:

12 more days of school!! Homeroom guidance 1st period. I got a 100 on math make-up test!!!

I got an 88 on science!! Donald McKay leaving 13th this Sat. Poor Missy!!! Typing I did lousy! I‘m gaining weight 119. Oh well. I typed up Spanish list. I did math homework. Talked to Missy. I watched T.V. My eyes bother me in this weather. People without contacts complain. Oh well. Read on Kerry!

BYE!!

How funny to think 119 pounds was a number to be worried about. I passed that weight a long time ago and won't be seeing that number again.

Grace Livingston Hill, author of Kerry was the original Christian Romance writer. This story is about a young girl whose father dies leaving her to finish his manuscript and get it published. There is some cloak and dagger action as villains are trying to steal it.

I like your teen "Oh well" attitude - foundation for your positive attitude today! I've always wanted to try Almond Rocha, but afraid it would break my teeth! I recognize that author's name - I think my mom has some books by her - will check that out next time I'm in TN . Thanks for sharing🤗

I think it would be fun to read, Kerry again to see what I remember. I guess the "Oh Well" philosophy has served me well through the many struggles of life!

Oh Susie that picture at the Nejapa Country Club brought so many memories! Dove off those boards, sat on those boards talking to friends eating turron de chocolate, that the waiters would climb up the steps of the high board to deliver to us. Spoiled Oversees Brats for sure! Playing Marco Polo in the pool +++++ Also, I would love taking little toddler Missy to shallow pools nearby. We had it all there, the pool tables and bowling alley too. You are right the Avocado Cocktails, muy sabroso. Those Were The Days! Tootsie

PS Missy never told me about Eggie Weggies... sound quick, easy and delicious...

I remember my weight at 120. It was on my driver’s license for years past 120. I don’t think that it is even on there any more. I guess after pictures were used the height and weight were removed! Fun memories!!!

I enjoyed your story as always.

Thanks for sharing this! How well I remember 120 pounds! It was a fleeting moment never to be seen again! Swimsuit angst is an on going thing for sure. See you soon!

You must have missed Missy! Living abroad, friends would come and go. Kids were pretty nice to newcomers because we’d all been one ourselves.

In Chile, our country club was Principe de Gales (Prince of Wales). Its members were Brits (whose kids all were in boarding school in England) and Americans. The club made the best steak sandwiches!

I did really miss her but fortunately we were able to stay in touch. You are right in that there was a continuous flow of people leaving and arriving. It taught me to try to make friends fast.

The country club had the best avocado appetizer shaped as melon balls and served in a glass bowl with ketchup. They also had frozen orange juice that was so refreshing!
