Dear Flowers:

Becky opened her presents. She got 2 gorgeous smocks, 1 belt, 2 patches & my earrings. Guess what we did today!! We wrapped up all our presents for Xmas, Birthday etc. We went to church. Read mag. (old ones). Mom & Dad at Hingst. Wish me luck on finishing “La Dama Boba.”

BYE!!

Note: Becky’s 12th birthday was on November 8th, but we waited to celebrate when my Dad got home from New York. I remember the smocks were embroidered with flowers.

Dad had purchased the small items we had requested from our list of gifts to give each other for Christmas and birthdays. We had fun wrapping them.

Dear Flowers:

I read on “La Dama Boba.” We went out to eat to the Baltimore to celebrate Becky’s birthday. I got an eye infection in my right eye. I‘m going to the eye doctor tomorrow. Dad showed us the 747 club. I read till I finished “La Dama Boba.” I wrote the report 6 pages! Phew!!! Watched T.V. Read on “April Lady.”

BYE!!!

Note: La Dama Boba (The Foolish Lady) is a comedy of two sisters in love with the same man. It was written by Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio in 1613. He was a Spanish poet, playwright, and novelist who was considered a key figure in the Golden Age of Baroque, second only to Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quijote).

The 747 Club was the upper deck of the Pan American 747 airplane, where First Class passengers could dine or just relax during the long flights.

Dear Flowers:

School! Honor Roll day on Wed! I’m mad fuming etc! Wed. half the kids won’t come anyway cause of the baseball inauguration! Say a football movie instead of P.E. Stayed for Drama. Rained most of the day! Mr. Lucas said I might get the part of Nellie. I got a letter from Anita. I answered it. I went to the eye doctor. The problem was that the one contact (right one) had a speck of dirt in it. Watched T.V. Read on “April Lady.”

BYE!!!

Note: Wearing contact lenses in Managua was not for the weak of heart, as there was so much dust, volcanic ash, etc. In the 1970’s soft or gas-permeable contacts were not available.

I had worked so hard to be on the honor roll and get a day off ,only to have most students not coming anyway. It wasn’t that much of a reward after all.

I sympathize with the dental work. I'm over all that but not finished yet. Sorry about the truck breakdown...so scary on the interstate especially. Have a beautiful FANTABULOUS Day!

The 747 Club...so cool! Yes children, once upon a time people dressed up and behaved themselves when traveling...

The air quality in San José was bad even after the volcano went dormant; the tons of buses & trucks with improperly tuned Detroit Diesel engines polluted the downtown area. The city lays in a bit of a valley, and the trade winds didn't come through strong enough to clear it out. I'll bet it's far better nowadays tho.

You guys were lucky your Dad travelled frequently and could bring back goodies!

The Pan American 747 Club was quite impressive, and people did dress up at the time. We were lucky that my dad traveled a lot and was able to bring us back goodies.

I can’t think of anything much more dreadful than breaking down on the interstate in summer. You must’ve been mad fuming! With a hyphen ( MAD-FUMING) it might become a thing. For me? I love it.

Yes, there were lots of fumes. Fortunately, the TDOT emergency vehicle came to our rescue. Later, we were towed by AAA.
