Dear Smiley:

Got up at 11:30!!! Read on how to read a person like a book! Went outside. Patricia loaned me her motor & I started it & jump on me or no say que & fell off. We went to Chili dinner. It was ok. Doris was there, Joey & Steve (has he changed cusses etc!) Sat with for abit. Joey gave me some of his ice cream!! John of Boy Scout played piano. I met Joe. Hes neat guy. After came home went out for abit but dullsville.

BYE!!!

Note: “No say que” - should read “no sé qué?” meaning “I don’t know what.” It all happened so fast on the minibike! I kept my guardian angel working overtime! I was very lucky that I wasn’t hurt.

I remember Joe. He was a young marine and I thought he was so handsome. He flirted with me a bit but of course nothing happened.

Dear Smiley:

I got sick in church. Super hot!!! Maria Christin invited Beck & I to her Birthday party. It was lunch & part of afternoon. It was alright. Only girls. I read & finished “Don Juan Tenorio.” It was pretty good. Went outside. No older guys came out!!! I wish some nice, older (16-17-18) came out, talked to me handsome to & we would become good friends. But I don’t have that luck.

BYE!!!

Note: I really wanted to have a boyfriend, but in hindsight, I was lucky I didn’t.

Don Juan Tenorio was a Spanish classic play written by José Zorrilla. The main character was a womanizer, and that is where we get the term “ A Don Juan.”

Dear Smiley:

Monday! I hate Mondays! Well in gym we danced & I always get steps mixed up. I got an 80 in Math, 91 in History, 84 in English. We can chew gum in English now!!! I didn’t go outside since I have to study for History. Got Young Miss. Bisbee’s on bus PWEK!

BYE!!!

Note: It was a big deal to chew gum in class. It was a stress reducer.

I was not happy having Dr. Bisbee as our bus monitor. I bet he wasn’t thrilled either. I can’t remember if he wore his helmet on the bus. Does anyone remember?

Dear Snoop,
Today was pretty good. Boy Scout Meeting, Shoenbergs joined. We were marching. Joe’s mad (disappointed) at me. I forgot to move my arms while marching. I got home. Ate. Rode mini bikes etc.  By the way I’m First Class. I passed it in the morning without studying. Chile supper was alright. I (we) took Alejandro there and 3 kids back. I spilt coke once, dropped ice-cream, stepped on a customer’s toe, but I did alright.
Today, everyone fell. First Hilka, then Patricia, the Hilca, then SUE. She had it in neutral, accelerated, changed gears. It took off without her, she didn’t let go, and it dragged her a bit.
Well, I’ll read and sleep
‘Night

NOTE: Achieving First Class is in reference to Boy Scouts. It looks like our Chili event was a success despite a few clumsy moves!
We’re lucky no one got hurt playing and falling off  minibikes. Back then we used no protective gear including helmets.

Dear Snoop,
Things are going wonderful, although we disagreed a lot. I had fun. Sue and Beck went to a birthday party today. I ate sea rations. The only person I think about is Hilca. Dwight came by ..asked me if I wanted to go to his house. I sat between him and Hilca. I beat him in two games of checkers. Hilca’s not that beautiful but she’s nice and I like her. I finished Spanish book. I knew my Geo Report and I’ve lost weight. My pants fell down. I might ask Hilca to go steady. I think she’d accept. Almost?? Unless she likes Cabra.
G’night

Dear Snoop,
Today was nice. On the bus, Patricia called me over to sit with her. She had me smell her lip gloss and she spread it on my lips. In Geography, I got an excellent on my report. A+, top class, and so on. On way to math, Patricia grabbed my eyes and I thought it was a boy, then I saw her skirt. I’ve got to read my span report…
Becky needs help in math. I have a geo test tomorrow but I don’t need to study. Good Night.

NOTE:  It sure looks like Patricia is interested in me, but I appear to be oblivious!

A question RE C-Rations: Can I assume that by this time after the earthquake, supermarkets were fairly well stocked, and that these C-rations were left over from the stocking up y'all did right after the quake?

Probably every school has a "Dr. Bisbee", with a quirky personality. When we think back about these teachers so many years later, perhaps we come to form an opinion we didn't have about them at the time. For example, our British Maths teacher was very fastidious, with slightly effeminate mannerisms, but not to the extent we thought him to be gay, (having a naïve assumption of what a "gay" mannerism was), but looking back, I'm pretty sure he was "in the closet".

In 10th…

Rich, these c-rations were leftovers from the earthquake. We thought they were a treat. I know they had them on Boy Scout camping trips. It is scary now to read the ingredients!

It is fun to look back at our teachers. We thought they were so old, when actually, except for Dr. Bisbee, mine were pretty young! Some of what they discussed was probably inappropriate, and they would be in trouble nowadays.

Surely do wish I had a clearer memory of Dr. Bisbee! I do recollect his love of Dulcinea in Don Quijote. Oddly enough I have a clear memory of how he crossed his legs, when sitting down; he crossed them twice like a pretzel. During my years he lived at the Lido Palace Hotel - and there were rumors about who might be his girlfriend... Tootsie

I do remember now how he would cross his legs. He always wore a white linen suit. I would love to hear about the rumors sometimes!

DOCTOR Bisbee was an icon. He was very quick to correct you if you called him "mister". A lot of kids didn't like him, but I thought he was ok. We often had "C-rats" on Boy Scout camping trips. We used to toss the small cans of peanut butter into the fire and wait for them to explode. Surprised "Sandys" has not come up in entries yet. It was the only American style fast food burger restaurant that was built catty corner from the school and became our favorite hang out.

Dr. Bisbee creeped me out. I remember that before the earthquake, he would stand at the bottom of the high school staircase and look up our dresses as we headed to class.

I remember Sandys as it was close to our school. Sandys was the closest thing to McDonald or Burger King that we had at that time. It was a treat to go there!

How interesting to see the government issue tin of FRUITCAKE. In my favorite fruitcake recipe book—-no need to worry; I don’t force those them on who’ve not actually expressed an interest!— there is a copy of the ingredients used in C-ration ones. They are terrifying and don’t seem to be describing a food at all. Perhaps a room deodorizer or a (powerful) facial scrub? It makes me wonder about the nature of the other dishes. From this blog, I seem to get the idea some were…….okay?

Scary reading all of the ingredients! Preservatives? Might make a powerful facial scrub!
