Dear Smiley:
I got an 80 on Spanish. At recess I listened to my radio! Boring day at school. Science test pretty easy but we will see. Went outside abit after got home. Pretty dull. Went out again after supper & even duller. Kids made fun of me but heck with them.
BYE!!!
Note: Remember when we all had small transistor radios to listen to music? We were dependent on the radio station to pick music we liked. There were no streaming services at our fingertips like Spotify or Pandora today.
I like my attitude of "heck with them." It helped me feel a bit better.

March 30, 1973 Fri.
Dear Smiley:
One of those day. I forgot my key & I only had my Spanish book with me. I made out fine though. Mr. Malone is leaving tomorrow for good. Everyone is leaving. Surprise math test (I flunked it). Mom & Dad at a party for Mr. Murphy (he’s leaving!) Went outside. DULLSVILE Rode on minibike a short bit.
BYE!!!
Note: Mr. Malone was our director of schools for A.N.S. I don’t know why he left, but many people left during the months after the earthquake.
I rode on the back of a minibike, which was fun, but you had to be mindful not to get burned from the exhaust pipe.

Dear Smiley:
Got up early. Mom drove us to Granada to Orthodonists. I have to get my 4 wisdom teeth pulled!!! Everyone else gets them out at 18 or 20 me 15!!! I finished “Brides Journey" Think that the name. We had a Earthquake (8 sec.) BIG!!! I was reading. I jumped up grabbed shoes & ran out!!! Abit later Doris called & she was all alone so I walked to her house. Went to church & then we ate at the Hingst. Dave at Jiloa (Boy Scouts) Today was the day the big Quake that destroyed Nic. but 42 yrs. ago!!!
BYE!!!
Note: I was not happy about the prospect of getting four wisdom teeth extracted. The doctor said they were coming in crooked and pushing my other teeth out of position.
The 1931 Managua earthquake caused mass destruction, and over 2000 died.
“Bridal Journey” took place in 1778 about a bridal party traveling through an untracked forest in Ohio and encountering Shawnee Indians. It was pretty brutal.

March 29, 1973 Thursday (David’s Diary)
Dear Di... Snoop,
Today was good. Nothing much really went wrong. Steve came in the morning. Rode bikes. He fell like an idiot and scratched himself and the bike all up. School was alright. Now that I think of it, Martha called me a klutz. She’s kind of joking but I guess Steve wants her to hate me; he keeps leading her on. I like Martha, but she must have something against me.
Outside, the weirdest things happened. The girls were singing dumb songs about us. The ugly ones sang the most. People are teasing me about Carmen and Blanca fighting over me. How I hoped it was true. It’s 11:20. I haven’t read my Spanish yet. Good night.
NOTE: Not much to add. I enjoyed reading my entry and am amused at the singing comments. I am also impressed that I had the discipline to be writing well past 11 pm!

March 30, 1973 Friday (David’s Diary)
Dear Snoop,
Today is actually Monday but I didn’t take you on my campout. We got at school at about 7:00. I was nervous and we left for Jilona (sp?). We camped on the opposite side. We crossed it by boat. I slept with Charly, Barton with Rich, and Monte with Mark. Charly makes me sick. He talks as if he were a big man. Well he’s not going to boss me around. I made that CLEAR. Well tomorrow is April fools day. We played tricks around Bill Chance. Allen Luedeking, and Murphy. We stole Charlies only pair of pants and he was out looking for them in underwear. Mike and Allen got .. down there… I don’t remember what happened.
Then we put Allen’s hand in warm water. He pissed all over himself. Murphy got up later pulled his pants down and forgot about underpants. Got all ??? And while talking ??? Peed on his leg. Then we all went to sleep. All of us but Jim.
NOTE: I couldn’t quite make out where we camped. I do recall crossing part of a lake by boat. I also remember putting Allen's hand in warm water thinking that it would trigger a response. I did a google search and read that there is little science to support this but it seemed to work for us!

I like your boat "Poco a Poco"....pretty much describes any effort at progress in L.A.
Transistor radio: I never had a pocket sized one, but I had a small Sony AM/FM/SW radio about the size of 2 pocket radios put together. I would put it under my pillow at bedtime and listen to Radio Juvenil. I can still hear The Sandpipers singing Guantanamera.
I was in 7th or 8th grade at Country Day School in San José C. 1968-9 and an upperclassman had bought a Honda S90 motorcycle, for which he gave rides around the block during one particular recess. The S90 didn't have a heat shield on the muffler, so I learned the hard way. The next day he…
David...remember the camping trip very well. We used the boat (the Poco a Poco) that Col. Chance had fixed up and bought the motor for. The location across the lake was an idyllic spot. I remember all those shenanigans we used to pull. Don't remember the name of the kid but he was going on and on about how aware he was and how nobody could pull anything on him, all the while Mike Murphy was standing next to him and peeing on his leg! Charlie Anstead was truly insufferable. We hiked from the camp site to the rim of the crater and then slid down through the volcanic rock. We were completely covered in dust by the …
