Dear Smiley:

I was quite grouchy today & have been for the last few day. I don’t know why though. Mom found our Xmas stocking material. I got 2 life savers & a stick perfume. NEATO. I did my English report on “Anne of Avonlea.” I’m reading on “Powder and Patch.” Its good. Georgette Heyer. Nothing much new today.but no pressure about school. PWEW! I hate school.

BYE!!!

Note: It was a very trying time. We were all making lots of unwanted adjustments, plus living with the aftershocks from the earthquake. We were all cranky.

I'm posting a picture of one of the houses next to ours that sustained incredible damage. We were so lucky.

Powder and Patch is a historical romance novel where the protagonist is rejected by his love for being too country. He goes to Paris and becomes sophisticated, and she realizes she liked him better before.

Dear Smiley:

Wow!!! Pretty good day. We went to church in las Colinas Club. The Bishop gave it. Dad took us out to eat at Tip Top to celebrate his birthday. I haven’t gone out to really eat out so it was really neat. Food good. I had parmesean breaded pork cutlets. Made a salad. The Hingst & Mr. Murphy are here for supper. Gosh this is awful I think don’t know what guy I like (not to much chose in Nic.) Roberto Vasali is nice (maybe?? He probably doesn’t even know I exist. Well someday I’ll have a neat guy. Just wait & see.

BYE!!!

Note: We loved eating at Tip-Top. They had the best food and were known for their chicken. My brother always ordered cheese pizza, his favorite. I liked to try different things.

I love how I manifested having a neat guy. It sure took a super long time to happen!

Diary February 4-5, 1973

February 5, 1973 Mon.

Dear Smiley:

Dad left to Guatemala & is back tonight. Goodnight or today. The chairs in Spanish were put the wrong way but quess who help me get mine right. Roberto V. Wow! He didn’t help Chiu who is right next to him. Chuis back!!! HURRAH!!! Diana Anstead too. In gym I can do a backward roll but not a forward one. I did a back one & Miss Hecker & Simone lifted me up tall. I was standing on my head. Went to Dr. with Mom. Eye Dr. Watched T.V. Did homework. Dads back.

BYE!!!

Note: When I was very young, I loved to do somersaults. Mom was worried that I would hurt myself, so she told me my head would fall off if I continued doing them. This stopped me. As I got older, I knew this wasn’t possible, but psychologically, I couldn’t do it in gymnastics. I could do all the backward flips with no hesitation, but forward, no way. Miss Hecker would get so mad at me that it made it worse.

February 3 Sat. (David’s Diary)

Dear Snoopy, Time goes by fast. Dad may leave to New York soon. We’re still going to Costa Rica. I didn’t finish my Report de Spanish but I did most of it. I got up at 7:30, thought it was 6:30 and began to get up for school. Then I remembered what today was and did my report part way. Today was a good day. I went outside, talked with friends but then they went riding in a friend’s car.  I decided not to go. I wonder if I have to do any English report.
Guess what. The impossible is being done. Susie is finishing the puzzle. I’m serious. I am also losing wheight (sp). Woopeed doo!!! Dad’s presents so far-  Briefcase, scuff (?), tie clasps with  ?? Bottles. Goodnight!

Note: It’s good to see that I’m having better days. Smart move not getting in a car with my friends! When I read about my concerns, I wish I could tell my 14-year-old self not to worry!
Perhaps Susie remembers what was so incredible about her finishing a puzzle! I have no recollection of this.
(Susie here! I don’t remember either, only that I never liked working on puzzles, haha!)

February 4 Sun (David’s Diary)

Howdy Snoopy, Today I got up at about 7:30. We went to church at las Colinas at 11:00  We went to TipTop for lunch. Had pizza. I sat in front on th way back. That got Beck and Sue mad. The Hingsts and Mr. Murphy came for dinner. Dad was in a bad mood before that because the club was closed, couldn’t play golf. I played monopoly with David and I lost. He landed in free parking. Got 1,000’s of dollars. When we ate we made names out of initials. Sue Fisch. Slimy Funny. Smelly Feet. We played funny bones after that. I took a bath and washed my hair. Good night.

Note: Going to TipTop was always a fun treat. I loved their pizza. Getting to ride in the front seat was great, even better when it irritated my sisters!
David was the Hingst’s older son, two years behind me in school. We often got together.
I got a chuckle when I read the ‘initials game’. Could be a fun game even today!
Funny Bones is similar to Twister; it challenges you to hold a card between your bodies.

February 5 Mon. (David’s Diary)

Snoop,  last night I didn’t go directly to sleep, watch movie ended at 11:30. Today was a regular day at school. I played good basketball. Seehafer got to Nicaragua today. Didn’t; go to school. At dinner Mom and us talked. Dad went to Guatemala and came back the same day. I told Mom about when a girl  (Mimi (sp?)) I think) grabbed me to look at my  ?? thing my patch. Ma didn’t hear the end. Oh, I forgot. In math I now have Mrs. Lopez. Brown teaches tenth now. Our teacher only speaks Spanish. It’s awful. Well, I’m not going to sleep right away but I’ll watch TV and never write in a diary at 9:25. I got an A in English. B- in Spanish. That puzzle we’re working on is difficult but I like it.  Write me now Ha Ha Ha.

Note: Interesting how I treat my diary as a confession and confess to not going to sleep immediately after making my journal entry.
I have no idea what patch Mimi was looking at or why my mom didn’t hear the end!
I clearly didn’t enjoy having math taught in Spanish, though it probably did me well!

I know that this is several weeks after you published these, so apologies for that. I loved reading both David’s and your accounts on going to Tip Top! It was always a real treat to go there for my family as well. It would always be after church (Union Church on La Panamericana) on Sundays. Now you can find them everywhere, not in just one location. I loved their chicken.

Thanks for bringing back such great memories.

Always learn interesting tidbits from your attachments...eg: the Tip-Top ad shows the Córdoba symbol requiring two letters: the C and the $. The Costa Rican Colón is a C with two slanted lines through it.

"That got Beck and Sue mad." I have a theory about sibling rivalry. In families where the age difference is minimal, the sense of perceived fairness is acute, and the slightest imbalance causes revolt amongst the troops. In families where the age differences are spread out, the explanation "...because he's much older than you" or "...because she's much younger than you" seemed to quell the arguments somewhat. Being by far the eldest (and first-born) I probably had an edge over my sisters when it came…

I like your theory on sibling rivalry. It seemed to work that way in my family.
