January 13, 1973 Sat.

Dear Smiley:

Got up earlier for a change 9:30. Went to the Super-market. Talked to Mary. She asked me to be her Maid of Honor, whenever she gets married. Whooe!!! I can’t wait. We watched T.V. We went to Kay’s & Larry for supper. Spaggatti. I’m sure I gained loads of weight. We went to church over by their house. We had fun.

BYE!!!

Note: I hadn’t been a Maid of Honor before. I felt honored and got to do it three years later.

Dear Smiley:

I got up at 11:30. Mary & Aunt Helen were here. I drove over with Uncle Norm & Dave & Beck etc. to Uncle Leos. The other car with the rest of us came there too & from there we drove to Cathys & Danny’s. We went snow mobiling!!! Its fun. I went with Uncle Leo with Mary & Uncle Leo goes so fast. I fell off on a turn. I went on about 10 times. Its really fun. We had turkey for supper. After supper I went on 2 more times. Its spookier at night. Watched T.V.

BYE!!!

Note: What fun! I had never even seen a snowmobile, so riding one was super exciting. Uncle Leo, my grandmother’s youngest brother, was always a lot of fun. He made jewelry and a suncatcher for me.

I wish I could still sleep like that. I never sleep past 6:00 or 7:00 anymore.

My diary Jan 13-14, 1973

January 15, 1973 Tues

Dear Smiley:

Got up late as usual. After lunch & dishes we went to Clarkins. Mom bought a beautiful shirt all different colors, & Dark eyes, it dyes your eye lashes. I’m scared to use it. We bought Dad some shoes. Grandma doesn’t feel well I think. Watched T.V. Missy called me. David got a Diary at Clarkins Take care of my Dad.

BYE!!!

Note: Clarkins was the predecessor to Target and Walmart. Mom did dye my eyelashes once, but only once, as it didn’t make much of a difference.

Buying shoes for my Dad was a big, difficult deal as he wore a size 13 D.

I worried about my Dad and how he was getting on, as he dealt with the aftermath of the earthquake in Managua.

My brother found his diary from 1973, and I thought it would be interesting to post his versions of our days because his perspective on life was somewhat different from mine. Let me know what you think. Unfortunately, a lot of his pages suffered water damage, so some posts will be incomplete or missing entirely.

January 14  Mon (David’s Diary)

Dear Dumb Dumb,
Today I got up early. Just imagine today I got to go on a snowmobile. We left for Uncle Leo’s house at about one. From there we went to Mr. Hennings house (Danny’s) …and Dean were there. At about 3:00 Danny brought the snow mobile.  We rode along in a lot near their house. It sure was fun. Ma and  +++ watch us from the house. We ate supper there and came home soon after.
The Kids seemed to like me.

Note: I vaguely remember the snowmobile ride but don’t remember the ‘kids’. Uncle Leo was my grandmother’s younger brother and a favorite great-uncle. So full of life. Played the banjo and spoons.

January 15 Tuesday (David’s diary)

Dear Snoopy,
Today I got up at about 15 to nine. I watched TV for a while and ate lunch before I knew it. We then decided to go to Carson. I was mad at Becky all right. Nothing seems to go right. What I wanted to watch I couldn’t.  In other words, today was a lousy day. Of course I got this diary. I ate to much today

Note: Interesting how not getting to watch what I wanted made it a lousy day.

I love the collaborating with David - similarities and differences. I laughed out loud when I read his names for his diary. I don't know if my brother ever had one, but it would be interesting to know. Curious- was dying your eyelashes the same as using mascara? I don't like putting it on, but I do when I put on makeup - which is less frequently now. Snowmobiling was fun - my cousins had a few and we went with them. I remember the thrill and fright - don't like fast rides at all. Even fast elevators gives me that stomach in the throat feeling! We took our exchange student from El Salvador riding and she had t…

P.S. I can personally attest to your sterling qualities as maid of honor, including the necessary skills to transport unwieldy wedding cakes down poorly paved country roads. Brilliant!

What a fun memory, me driving you to your wedding destination in my old Jeep wagon. You were holding the wedding cake in your lap, and I was trying to navigate the old riverbed road. We made it with the cake in one piece and it was a beautiful wedding ceremony!

Dave's entries will no doubt be reminding me of my own youth....boys are generally more self-centered than girls at that age (or any age?...), and I can identify with having a fantastic day (snowmobile) and all well the next day, until a minor disagreement "ruins the whole day"; mountains out of molehills.

Kids are so quick to adapt tho...Three weeks ago he witnessed probably the scariest event of his life, and now it's "squabbles with the sibs as usual". Youth is too young to be grateful; that only comes when you're old enough to have acquired some wisdom. (Some never do, I suppose).

Going through the "tween" years, I was seemingly never in complete harmony with both of my sister…

I love your philosophical thoughts on youth. I think it will be fun to see the parallel entries. Mom had us all within a three-and-a-half-year period, so we were close in age.

What a nice thing to publish parallel entries from your diaries! I’m interested to see how they fit together as we go along. By reading this each week, we all DO go along—- together, really. Though don’t know the others who comment, I always enjoy reading their thoughts. For me, they are part of the story tool

Loved Uncle Leo's sun-catcher with the Kentucky Cardinal in the Dogwood Tree - a familiar sight to me living in Frankfort, KY and having a Dogwood tree in front of my living-room window that Cardinals frequent...

So cool that David kept a dairy as well and addressed it using different names. Did Becky keep a dairy as well? Did your parents encourage doing this?

Thanks as always! Tootsie

Thanks, Tootsie. I have cardinals that visit my bird feeder every day, and I love them. I have the sun-catcher in my bedroom window!

I think it will be fun to see David's diaries too. I don't think Becky kept one. I know I loved writing in my diary and I got a new one every Christmas.
