Dear Smiley:

Good reason to smile No School! Labors Day. Went to the C.C. Swam. Neighborhood kids came too so we had fun. A bee stung me! Yulk doesn’t hurt hardly anymore. Wash my hair. Watched Esmeralda. We all went out for supper to Los Ranchos. YUM!

BYE!!!

Note: C.C. stands for the country club and we loved to swim! Insects have always loved me. I am type O blood so maybe that has something to do with it.

Los Ranchos had my favorite steak - churrasco with a chimichurri sauce. Chimichurri sauce is made with fresh parsley, oregano, garlic blended with olive oil and red wine vinegar, salt, and pepper. Some people add red pepper flakes. It is delicious!

Dear Smiley:

I got my 3d wisdom tooth pulled. Left upper one. It was up high & hurt more. Thought Dr. would pull my lips off! Didn’t go to school. Wrote Mary & Carmen. Did some math. Watched T.V. Rosa left (sick supposebly) Read on “Bath Tangle.”

BYE!!!

Note: I don’t know why Dr. Barrios didn’t just pull them all at once to get it over with. I am sure he had his reasons but it sure was agony anticipating more pain.

Bath Tangle

Dear Smiley:

I didn’t go to school cause my mouth was bleeding abit. I finished “Bath Tangle” It was really good. I did my English report on “Civil Contract.” Watched T.V.

BYE!!!

Note: I guess one good thing about getting each wisdom tooth pulled out individually was missing school, however, always more make-up work.

My Diary: May 2-3, 1973

May 1, 1973 Tues. (David’s Diary)

Dear Snoop.
Today, no school. We went to the country club today. The Noygueras and Mauricios Terran were there .. Also Regina Lucia and Decire. At 2308 patrol meeting we discussed things. Barton talked back to me a bit. But later he obeyed a bi better. Joey is a good marcher. He is unsure about himself. I was a strict leader. Later family went to los Ranchos. Pizza, a hard crust, cheese and ketchup

NOTE:  It looks like I’m following marine Joe’s example in driving my boy scout patrol.
Pizza at Los Ranchos sounds like a mistake.

Los Ranchos

May 2, 1973 Wed. (David’s Diary)

Dear Snoop,
Today was another lousy day. At first there was a THC John said we might not have a campout since most of the troop isn’t coming. Joe really bauled out. Footsie, Monti and especially Murphy, even though he wasn’t there. Joe is leaving soon. I resent that. I think he’s a real nice guy.
Well I practiced a bit at throwing a knife into a target.Charlie and I stayed later and Joe took us to School. Seehafer was absent. Tomorrow I got Geography, Math and son on. Sue had her tooth taken out. Outside not much happened. G’nite.

NOTE: Knife throwing!  Another good memory.

David's Diary May 2, 1973

May 3, 1973 Thurs. (David’s Diary)

Dear Snoop,
Today at 8:00 I arrived at the Texaco bodega. I was the only there until about 5 min later when Eric came and 10 min later Pheiffer came. He poured salt down my head and back. I stole a tapón there. My tire was low. The front one. Well I’m working ahead in math. Spanish was alright. Dr. Bisbee got a record on Romeo and Juliet-showed it to the other class. It was 97 deg in the shade. Outside we were having contests on who stands farthest on bike. Tairo and I are about the same. You know that the Texaco bodega today they wouldn’t let me use telephone to get home. I went to the ??? Group and called from there.

NOTE: I’m not sure what we were doing at the bodega. Maybe Eric recalls? Also not sure what I meant by stealing a tapón. Perhaps a plug for my leaky front tire.
Sue here, I think the Texaco bodega refers to a small convenience store attached to the Texaco gas station.

I agree with the other person posting——wisdom tooth extractions are horrible! And I can confirm that having two done in one go is a very bad idea……I fainted!

Oh my goodness. I guess then I was lucky he pulled them one by one on different days. Painful and thinking about the next extraction was stressful.

The Esmeralda ad indicates it's from the Dominican Republic...I wonder if it was being re-broadcast from a repeater in Managua, or were you receiving the program straight from the DR?

Always interesting trying to make sense of odd words or expressions used so many years ago. You could be right about a "tapón" being a tire plug, tho in those days I don't remember using tire plugs, like on a car's tire. A "tapón or "tapa" is a "cap" or "lid" and makes me think it was the screw-on Schrader valve cap that frequently went missing. Bike tire were cold-patched with what Ticos called a "parche" (mimicking the English word😁), and I always had to get Dad to help me…

Yes, it was horrible and having to know that you still had more to come out was not comforting.

"Footsie" was Mark Chance, then Monty Nanton and Mike Murphy. I remember well how Joe used to talk about Marine K-Bar knives and throwing them. I can remember practicing that as well. I don't think the "Eric" he is referring to is me? I have no memory of that event...

Joe made a big impression on you all. I had a slight crush on him as he used to flirt with me.
