My diary - May 4-6, 1973

May 4, 1973 Fri.
Dear Smiley:
Happiest Day of this Month of this year! Everything went swell in school. People were nice & friendly. Doris did one mistake she was talking to Bobby Vasail & she asked him if he likes me. (He has a girlfriend!) he said I was a very nice person & very pretty. Tonight Mom dropped us off at Marine house for Italian Night. Joe was there and kissed my hand and flirted with me. He proposed to me kiddingly. He’s leaving on Tues. He put his arm around me & played with my fingers & told me nice things.
BYE!!!
Note: I was thrilled that an older man was flirting with me. Now, looking back, no bueno!
There is no way my Dad would have allowed me to date him. I was just 15, nine years younger than Joe was.

Dear Smiley:
I know I’m almost positive if Joe was here longer he would date me! My luck he’s leaving Tues. to Africa. He’s a nice guy but 24 yrs. old. I seemed to attract older guys always!! Its better than not attracting anyone. You know lately people have been telling me I’m cute so I quess I’m not so ugly after all. I spent the whole day reading “The Diary of Anne Frank.” She was alot like me.
BYE!!!
Note: I definitely had a lot of insecurities about my looks, wanting to fit in. The good part of getting older is that it is okay to be different - in fact, I embrace it hence sometimes my purple hair!.
I felt a strong connection to Anne Frank as my Dad and his immediate family managed to escape the Nazis to Ecuador. My great Uncle and Aunt in the Netherlands did not. Reading her diary encouraged me to continue writing in my diary.

Dear Smiley:
Went to church. I stayed home while Mom & Beck went to C.C. Read on “These Old Shades.” Went to Los Ranchos to eat!!! Then we picked up Dave. He’s depressed about Joe leaving. Me too!!! Went to Hoars. Came home. Studied for Spanish Test & did History report. PRAY I do ok.

Note:Walter Hoar was one of my Dad’s best friends and he was David’s Confirmation Sponsor. He was a chemical engineer and ran the Cervecería Victoria brewery in Managua, Nicaragua. I remember taking tours of the company and the wonderful odor of the brewer's yeast. I got to spend time with his son Paul and beautiful wife Katita several weeks ago. He entertained me with some wild stories about our parents.

Dear Snoop
Well today was alright. It is the Italian night. Food was alright. Barton and Hingst dislike Pfeiffer. I have to be at the marine house at 7:00 am. Well good nite.
I got a Physical test. I’m alright, and am 1 1/2 taller than normal.

Knew that was Walter immediately - the very handsome Walter Hoar... he made sure we kids had fun... one night he taught, about a dozen of us Junior High kids, to play Spin The Bottle and supervised it, making sure the boys kissed us on the lips😂
Oh Susie you keep going to eat at Los Ranchos - would love to go there right now. Miami has one - maybe I need to go there! Thanks for the Chimichuri recipe last week... Tootsie
Isn’t it wonderful thinking of your parents HAVING wild stories? Looking back now from our present ages, they were young——though as teenagers we’d never have seen them that way…..
