Dear Flowers:

Happy Thanksgiving! I slept to 15 after 11:00. Got home alittle after 12:00. Party a flop! Queen: Debbie, King: Carlos Martinez, Princess: Mimi Roa, Prince: Richard Roa. Went to Super. Mrs. Jones was over. Watched T.V. Lets see: Miss Morgan, Sandy Philips, Arturo Moreli, Mari Eugenia, 2 stewardess, 1 Captain & one Co-pilot were here for supper. Yum! Turkey. I sat with Maria Eug. & 2 pilots. 1st time I’ve talked to grown-up in grown-up situation (I think). Missy getting her tounsil out Dec. 15.

BYE!!!

Note: I wasn’t too impressed with the coronation party, as I wasn’t asked to dance much, but I did get a kiss. It’s funny, I didn’t write anything else about it.

My mom sure was a trooper hosting this big group - out of her comfort zone! Arturo earned a turkey dinner, bringing the actual turkey from Miami. Maria Eugenia was my Dad’s secretary, and I always enjoyed talking to her. I would love to know what happened to her. The others were single Embassy friends.

I felt very grown-up talking to the two adult pilots and not delegated to the kids' table.

Mom’s menu: turkey, dressing (baked in the turkey), mashed potatoes, gravy, canned peas (couldn’t get frozen ones), and a lime jello salad with pineapple, shredded carrots, and nuts. She made a delicious pumpkin custard pie for dessert.

Dear Flowers:

No school!!! I got up at 10 to 8. Looked through magazines for pictures of love. Played tennis. Oscar & Ricardo both are giving lessons. We went to the Seehafers. Steve went to Glee Club Party. We played baseball. Dave on my team; Becky & Lisa. We won 33 runs I think! Edgar is the invisible man. Only sleeps here. Watched T.V. Oh! I have been so lazy I haven’t done any homework!! I hope I get some done & project for English by Sun. Wish me luck. Saw futball movie. Dad showed it.

BYE!!!

Note: I talked with my brother and sister, and none of us recalls Edgar or why he stayed with us. If it weren’t for my diary, we wouldn’t remember him at all. He was from Guatemala and had apparently stayed briefly at our house.

Interesting that we played baseball; I don’t remember playing any sports for fun other than swimming and tennis.

Dad sometimes got movies and showed them on the weekend using a movie projector and a projection screen. I was again being creative with my phonetic spelling of futball (football).

Diary: November 24-25, 1972

November 25, 1972 Sat.

Dear Flowers:

Believe it or not I got up at 7:00. I went to the C.C. with Dave & Becky & played tennis. I wish, I wish I would have brought my bathing suit. Pool full of boys! Edgar talked to us a bit (also in pool!) We went to Doña Mercedes, Discoteck (records for Steves birthday)  & librebria for a piece of cartulina. I outlined Science. Listened to record all afternoon & part of night. Went to Mass. Mom & Dad at Ludikings. Edgar at a Party  BAH! I think he hates our goots.

BYE!!!

Note: I definitely was boy crazy!

We visited our seamstress, Doña Mercedes, for a fitting. Mom bought our clothes once a year when we visited my grandparents. She had to guess how much we would grow in a year. Doña Mercedes filled in the gaps for us girls.

Discoteck was a record store, and we went to get Steve Seehafer a birthday gift. I bet he wished he had kept it, as it might be worth something today.

We went to the libreria (bookstore) to buy cardboard for a school project.

Again, definitely an interesting spelling: goots (guts).

How nice that your parents invited the flight crew to enjoy Thanksgiving at your home. That kind of hospitality I think was just a part of being an American in a foreign country. Mom and Dad often included numerous "unknowns." My Aunt Beth, who also lived in Managua, would invite the Marines that worked at the American Embassy. They were so handsome and I felt very grownup just getting to be in their presence. Too awkward and shy to try and talk to them🥲.

Ay, ay, ya, yay (sp?) Canta Y no llores porque cantando se allegran los corazones.

So enjoy getting to read your secrets to Flower. Tootsie

I love the Los Pollitos song. I have been singing it to my granddaughter and only remembered the first few verses. Thanks for sharing it.

"Futball"? I get it; logical. But "goots"?? Really? Sounds German, LOL!

Our neighborhood record store in Bogotá was huge, and had like 4 or 5 "listening" booths along the wall, just like old telephone booths. You'd pick out an LP, hand it to the employee, step into the booth, and he'd play 15-30 seconds of each track on the LP for you. That courtesy went only so far of course, and if you didn't buy anything after the third LP, he'd say "ya no más! Vete!"

I wonder if they had that setup in the states? I never saw it after we got back, at least in KC.

Clothes were always a problem in L.A. because of my height. I…

Vagabundos are always comfortable in their clothing! We didn't have to dress up for the American Nicaraguan School. In Colombia, I wore a pinafore uniform, which made dressing easy but boring. I bet it was hard finding clothes as you are very tall.

I don't remember the record store having booths to listen to recording. The one you went to sounds pretty cool!

I think we have all been wall flowers at some point, but we did bloom and show that we changed!

She was very glamorous, and I don't recall her wearing much makeup or being overly concerned about her appearance. She went to the beauty shop once a week for her hairdo, and Doña Mercedes made her beautiful dresses!
