Dear Diary:

Tired! I started to type up Davids report. Washed Beckys hair (Mom started it). Missy invited me to her house to eat lunch. I went (they picked me up). We talked most of the afternoon. Coverstones then invited David & me to the movies Cabrera “Fumar no, amar si”  Dick Van Dyke. It was funny about a town that gave up smoking for 30 days for $25,000,000.00. They came over & had some drinks. Watched T.V. Played Hearts all night.

BYE!!!

Note: We went to the Cabrera Theater to see Fumar No; Amar Sí (Smoke, No; Love, Yes). “Cold Turkey“ was the original English title. The idiom doesn’t translate well, lol. Becky didn’t get to go as she was still sick with the measles.

Dear Diary:

We went to mass. Becky stayed home. Well I went to the Caleros farm (Dad, David & I). Leesa was there & Stewart kids. They had horses. I got on the mansito one but I was to heavy for the poor thing. I then got on a big white one. Leesa promised to lead it but then she let go & Buddy (her brother 8 yrs old) left out a scream to make horse go & it did. Luckly I stopped it. I kissed a priest goodbye I had to kiss everyone also so I figured I had to kiss him too. Stupid me. Oh well. Finished David’s report.

BYE!!!

Note: Adolfo Calero was a good friend of my Dad’s. He had a beautiful farm that we sometimes visited and there were always many people there. In Latin America, people always greet each other with a kiss and again when they leave - essentially brushing cheeks and an air kiss. I am not sure about proper protocol with a priest but this was not the thing to do. If they were a Bishop, you were supposed to genuflect, kiss their ring, and receive a blessing. As stated in my diary, “Oh well.”

Adolfo Calero later became the leader of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force, the largest rebel group of the Contras, opposing the Sandinista government.

Another interesting tidbit: Leesa's family lived in Barranquilla, Colombia during our time there. I didn’t know her as she went to the American School and I went to a Colombian parochial school.

Mansito means tame.

Dear Diary:

Anja’s mom twins.Girls 7 lbs each. Big! I got a 94 on the Spanish test! Ya! We had a short assembly. I read Alfred Hitchcock mag. Read papers. Did homework. Talked to Anja for about a good hour. She told me about a horror movie she saw shiver. Watched T.V. Lucia Sombra knows who her parents are. Mom went to an American Society meeting.

BYE!

Note: Lucia Sombra was a telenovela (soap opera) about a young blind girl. She was born into a wealthy family but her mother was unwed and was told that her baby died. Instead, she was given to a poor family to raise.

Oh Susie - I love it that you kissed the Priest, makes perfect sense - might have made his day! Hope Adolfo Calero survived the revolution! Now, the part that has me laughing so hard is that my family invited you to go to see Cold Turkey, as my Dad's job was to manufacture cigarettes!! Wonder if you remember any discussion of the irony? Tootsie

I never even thought of the irony of your parents taking us to see Cold Turkey or any talk about it afterward. Hilarious!!!

Soap operas are the same right around the world, aren’t they? And they never change; the same plots keep turning up, particularly as far as a person discovering their family isn’t really their family!

Brought back some good and some scary memories. Thanks for sharing! I remember my horse wanting to go back to the barn and rubbing up against trees trying to get me off. When we finally headed back he took off at a gallop. That was fun. The scary memory was I was given a bow and arrow and told to shoot at a target. A large dog was sleeping under the target. Of course my shot went low. The arrow went right through a box by the dog’s head. The dog woke up but didn’t seem fazed. I was rattled.
