Dear Diary:
School Uh! No real history class. Discussed our jail. Mr. Lucas is leaving Thurs. to Panama so he won’t be here for it. Assembly for the Day of the Book 2'd period. In English I got a 94 everyone else go 70 that I‘m proud of myself. On Spanish Dictado I got a 56 but I can pull it up. In Science I got a A+!!! David does have the measle. He broke out today. I did an extra credit report for History. No other homework for a change! I went to Simmons. I watched T.V. I’m invited to Ann's tomorrow. Mom's went to a party at Stewarts.
BYE!!
Note: The jail was part of the Kermesse (a charitable festival) and Mr. Lucas was our class sponsor. Our class was in charge of the jail. Students pay for someone to be arrested and then that person has to pay to be released.
Proud of Mom going to parties solo even though Dad was traveling. Mom was pretty shy so this took courage.

Dear Diary:
I still have a cold. I wrote notes to Missy. I stuck my foot in my mouth again! In P.E. Mrs. Burton was going to scold us so someone (Lynne) as me what do she want. So I said shes going to scream at us. Mrs. Burton heard me & said “No I’m not go to scream at you Im just going to have a talk with you!” Yeeks! We didn’t go to tennis. Mom drove me to Ann’s house. We played a whole bunch of games. Had fun. I watched T.V. Cynthia Currin was over. Did homework. Moms at the Goldsmith’s party but hope Dads alright.

Note: It is a small world as one of Anne’s best friends in Nicaragua was Irene who now lives close to me. I love the story of how we reconnected. Irene was on Christmas break when the big earthquake hit. She never returned to Managua and we lost touch. Many years later, I moved to Tennessee and got active with H.A.B.I.T. (Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee), taking my dog to nursing homes. I attended a banquet at the University. They called out her name to receive an award. I recognized it but there were over a hundred people there and I couldn't see her from the back. After the presentation, I sought her out saying, "I think we went to school together." She said, "Probably not." Long story short, we did. Serendipity!!! Through the years, life got busy, we had different interests and obligations but the bond we share is strong. I now see her most Monday nights in yoga class. I am grateful for her friendship and our shared youth experience.

Dear Diary:
David still hasn’t gone to school. The whole time in school everyone was saying how awful I look your eyes are all swollen. Your getting the measles. So I went home 4th period. I scared the pants off Miss Olson when she asked what was wrong with me. The whole class just stared. Oh! I hope they won’t make fun of me. I read a bit. I sleeped all afternoon. What I have is a cold & its in my eyes now. I read a bit on the “The Big Family” & a bit on “Going on Sixteen. Watched T.V. I sleep with Mom. Wish me luck tomrrow.

Note: Poor David! Even after the fiasco of getting the shot and 'mooning' the office, he still came down with the measles. Somehow Missy and I escaped.
Miss Olson was our typing teacher. I don't think she came back after the earthquake.

Wow! I loved the kermesses! My mom’s barbecued beef was always a big hit with everyone there. What an amazing time and place for growing up, right?
How I wish these pics could be in color. Your mom looks so stylish. Fun read, as always! Measles sounds terrible. Your poor brother. Love, Amanda S
Wonderful read again, Susan! Did your siblings ever put you in the "jail" or vice versa? Love Ms Olson's cultural outfit!
I concur with the other comment; Gerri’s dress is rather wonderful and it’s a shame you don’t still have it.

And today just happens to be Anne's Birthday. Happy Birthday Anne !
