Pan Am patch
Pan Am patch

December 2, 1972 Sat.

Dear Flowers:

I got up at 8:00 & we went to the Union Church Bazaar. I didn’t buy anything but Mom did. I took a nap when I came home. I read on an Alfred Hitchcock magazine. Watched T.V. I put my Pan-Am patch on (sewed) it yesterday on my shorts. I mended a few clothes. I’m going to read on “The Gabriel Hounds”. I hope I get my report on English done tomorrow & history outlines. Wish me luck. I wrote Grandma & Grandpa letter. You know they got a dog now.

BYE!!!

Note: I am so grateful to the nuns at Marymount who taught me the basics of sewing in elementary school.

I am surprised I didn’t find anything at the Bazaar, as going to community, garage, and tag sales is now one of my favorite activities.

My grandparents' black ball of fluff dog didn't stay long, as Grandma kept tripping over him. They found him a new home.

Dear Flowers:

We went to 10:30 mass. I got sick in church. Went to 2 super “Mas por Menos” & Colonia. They have 4 building its a shopping center. We went to the C.C. for lunch. It was packed. I finally finished my English report!!! Watched T.V. Nicaragua won Cuba in beisball. We roasted marshmallows. Becky’s face is breaking out. Read on “The Gabriel Hounds”. It’s spookish!

BYE!!

Note: This was a significant celebration in Nicaragua because of the claim that Cuba had sent trained professional players to the games and not amateurs. It was an exciting game, with Nicaragua triumphing 2-0!

Dear Flowers:

8 more days of real school!! 3 days of Semesters. I hope I don’t have to take any. School was yulk. Mr. Hookers back. I have trillions of test laying in front of me waiting to kill me. Stayed for Drama. Did some of the homework. Mrs. Seehafer over  Went to Dentist with Mom & Beck. Dad brought home a tray from the airplane. Yum. Dad works at airport too now. Started Dec. 1, 1972. I going to read a bit on “The Gabriel hounds.

BYE!!!

Note: I was over the top with the “trillions of tests waiting to kill me!” Ah, the drama of being a teenager.

My Dad enjoyed working at the downtown office, but the airport was a lot more exciting. Bringing home a leftover food tray was a special treat.

The Gabriel Hounds was a novel by Mary Stewart, and I found it scary. A young girl seeking adventure runs into her cousin in Damascus, and they invite themselves to their eccentric aunt’s, where they are not welcomed. There is intrigue and danger as the cousins try to solve the mystery.

I do still keep a daily diary now, but there were many years that I was not as disciplined. There are lots of gaps!

Beisball was so much fun in Managua - I remember in the off season US major league players would come play there and stay at the Grand Hotel. At the hotel the Jacobson family would invite us to come swim so we got to see the American players, Larry Lerner is the only name that tunes in at the moment. Pan Am was my first flight ever - when I carried Missy in her Moses basket to Las Mercedes Airport.

It was a time when flying was an occassion to dress up. When I went to boarding school in Michigan I flew from Managua in high heels, dressy suit, hat and gloves! How uncomfortable🥹

Back to last week - my…

Thanks for reading my posts, Tootsie! That last sentence was pretty dramatic. I was being a drama queen!

Who could forget the ubiquitous blue Pan Am travel bag, a status symbol the world over? "The World's Most Experienced Airline" to the public, and "The Chosen Instrument" to the public sector (due to it's government-backed diplomatic role in promoting democracy in the Americas).

We were "TWA-centric" people, since Mom worked there for several years before marrying Dad. Known as "The Lindbergh Line" (due to the employ of Charles Lindbergh for route exploration), and later in the 40's & 50's, as "The Airline of the Stars", (as movie producer Howard Hughes bought the airline in 1939). Mom worked in Ticketing, and said she was always looking for movie stars.

Low fare jet service in the 60's brought an end to…

Not crazy at all; I admit to a silly habit of opening a new freshly-printed hardback and plunging my oversized beak into the crease to smell the fresh ink and paper. And the library's the best way to read; that way, one doesn't accumulate books nobody will want after one is gone. No, I'm the crazy one, hoarding all these books nobody will want....90% of which are probably available online.

Nevertheless, most of my books were acquired 25 years ago and beyond, and most I consider old friends, patiently waiting on the shelf for my return, to open their pages and remember. I still have a very few whose pages I've yet to open. They also patiently beckon, reminding me…

Love reading all your posts, but this one made me giggle out loud! Love "yulk" , how you write to Flowers like a friend " you know that" and admire you for going to many places after getting sick at church. I remember myself at that age - if I didn't feel well, especially with a cold or runny nose, I wanted to be home 🥴
