Dear Smiley:

School!!! PE. was awful. Test is on Wed. She goes if you do it poorly F & if don’t do it F. Well I don’t think I should do it. Watched T.V .Went outside. I was standing by the post talking to Lucia & Becky & someone threw a stone & it hit me on the head. I felt it & I had a huge lump. I had Lucia touch it & then went over to rest of girls & they touch it. Then one of them screamed. They had blood on their hand. I looked & mine was full of blood. I went home & we walked to Dr. Caldera (whole neighborhood behind us). He wasnt home so went to another Dr. Just a small cut. But bleed alot.

BYE!!!

Note: Scary, but also sweet, that everyone walked with us to Dr. Caldera’s house, which was a block away, and then to another doctor. Grateful I had no permanent injury, just a headache for a few days.

Dear Smiley:

I had 2 study halls in a row & then recess. Mr. Hooker no vino. I worked in fresco stand. Not too much fun cause no cold drinks & people bitter. I have a hard Spanish test tomorrow & gym test. I’m scared. Went outside but no fun. I don’t think Alvaro likes me at all. I like him as a friend pero el a mí nada. Wish me luck on test. My head aches.

BYE!!!

Note: I wonder now if maybe I had a small concussion. My history teacher, Mr. Hooker, didn't show up, so I had an extra study hall.

I don’t remember an Alvaro in our neighborhood; I wrote I like him as a friend but he doesn’t have feelings for me.

Susie's Diary

March 28, 1973, Wed.

Dear Smiley:

I wore clogs to school (but I brought sandals just in case) I did use them. Mom worked in the library. Spanish test super hard! I got an F in gym cause I won’t do it. I’m glad I did everyone was watching. Just like a circus. Watched T.V. Dave had a Boy Scout meeting here. Dads home!!! Went outside sat on Norvera yard & Carmen & Regina played the guitar.

BYE!!!

Note: I was smart to bring another pair of shoes, as the clogs were uncomfortable. They made me taller (I was already pretty tall), and the wooden base made me as graceful as an elephant.

I was a rule follower, so it took guts for me not to take the gym test. Oh, how I hated gym!

Hi Snoop,
25611, that’s John Byrd’s telephone number. - have to tell him our food. Thursday or Friday 9:30 Scout Master conference. Wed. 9:30 dishes. Wed at 6:00 meeting. Tomorrow I sell tickets. Dad went to New York. Sue sleeps with Mom. Some kids - Eduardo, Mauricio, and Julio were throwing rocks. They hit Sue in the head and slit it- no stitches.
I think I might be a lawyer later on. I can spin basketball on my finger. Today I sold a ticket. I didn’t have change. So the man told me to keep it. Tomorrow, if I’m lucky, I might sell all of the ones I have left. I might need more.
Good nite

Note: Looks like I was selling tickets to some sort of scouting fund raiser. I’m guessing John was in my troop. A sign of the times that phone numbers were only 5 digits long!  I’m glad Sue survived the hit on her head without the need for stitches. I still have a scar on my head from a rock thrown at me when we lived in Colombia. I have no idea why I thought I might become a lawyer.

March 27, 1973 Tues (David’s Diary)

Dear Snoop
Today was ins one ways good and in others bad. I didn’t do my Spanish homework and my grade went down. We had no geography today. I could have done my homework then. I got an 80 on my English. - Ma will get mad if I get a B- in English - whew. I’m reading this book - the day of the drones by A.M LIghtner - I’ve got to read my Spanish report. I hope I get an A when I finish it. I sold two tickets today. Tomorrow, I’ll be able to sell more. Everyone wants to go. Well, it’s ten, I mights as well read and sleep.

Note: The Day of the Drones was a post-apocalyptic book published in 1970. It describes a world five hundred years after a nuclear disaster. I remember being concerned about nuclear bombing as we moved into the Cold War era.

Dear Snoop,
This morning I cleaned the pots at Allen’s house. Scout conference on Friday.
The bowls and cockroaches and I swatted one down Eric’s back. I saw it and hit it away. Allen has (had) a horse. Someone stabbed it or she cut herself on something. The vet gave her a tetanus shot just in case she survived. She was pregnant. The vet took the not yet born colt out. She (mother) was puffed with gases. She went through something like convulsions and died.  We tried to  ??? Her.
Both Panther and Mustang patrols went together for campout. Meeting was at my house. Mom had to take Charlie home. She got mad. Dad came back. I sleep with Mom next. Tomorrow I’ll do my English report.
Bike was fixed.

NOTE:  Pretty sad reading about the pregnant horse. Looks like we are in the planning stages for a camping trip. Some of my best memories from Nicaragua came from our Boy Scout outings. Our Scout Master was a Marine, and he definitely toughened us up.
