March 23, 1973 Fri.

Dear Smiley:

So-so day. I got a 90 on Spanish. I was really tired & in a bad mood so I tried to take a nap on the mats in Study Hall & recess. Do you think people would let me sleep!!! NO!!! Julio sticks a leaf in my ear & won’t shut up. Sara keeps doing somersaults by me to scare me Simone tickled my feet etc!!! Watched T.V. Went outside. Saw 5 movies. Combat, Miami Seaquarium, Mickey Mouse, Space program & Volage to the Bottom of the Sea”.

BYE!!!

Note: I sure was being a silly girl trying to nap during recess, asking for trouble.

Dear Smiley:

Becky got her braces off!! YEAH!!! I went to Giselas PWEK!!! I didn’t want to but I keep telling her no everytime so I figured I should. Went swimming. Pool BEAUTIFUL!!! I meet a girl named Socorro. Gisela says shes a bitch!!! Shes being transfered to Costa Rica. We just had a tremor 10:35. Went outside. It was pretty fun just girls though. I’m scared!!!

BYE!!!

Note: Tremors continued and every one brought back terrifying memories.

So happy for Becky to finally get her braces off.

Gisela was a good friend. I am not sure why I didn’t like to go to her house, especially if she had a nice pool.

Dear Snoopy
100+84 = 184  184/2 = 92
School was pretty good for being a Friday. Phew, I got a 84 on my Spanish test giving me a 92 average. It depends on my report. I have to finish that book. I’ll read tonight. I’m a little over 5’2”, Beck is a little over 5’6”. Steve is probably about 5’3”. I hope I grow fast. Outside I had fun. I guess. I saw the movies. At last. I am probably considered a dude by the girls but I coming out of my shell. Cabra is pretty short, but I guess Beck looks at me  as I look at him. Dr. Bisbee gave a hard test- well Good night.

Note: I was definitely struggling with my confidence and hoping a growth spurt would hurry up. It was tough seeing Becky, who was 2 years younger than me, towering over me!

Dear Diary, I mean Snoop, I forgot !!!!!
Today was alright. We had a boyscout meeting,  Camp out the 31st.
Sat. We played football. I’m no spectacular player but I know the rules. Outside, it was boring. I think  Hilca likes me. I prefer Patricia - but however it goes, I’ll ask one to go steady. I did my Spanish but yet have to do my report on Benjamin Franklin. Beck is mad at me. Now that I think about it, I like all of the girls. Patricia was almost trying to show me how she could pop a wheelie. She almost killed herself. I sold 10 tickets today.
Good night.

NOTE: I’m cringing a bit as I read my plan to ask Hilca or Patricia to go steady. I don’t remember them, but I believe they lived in our neighborhood. Earlier, I thought I was referring to my classmate Patricia. I’m pretty sure that was not the case.

Dear Snoop,
I have to get to sleep earlier. It’s 11:30 already. Today I woke up, did part of my report. Steve called, he wanted to know if I could go to launching. No, church was why- I like going to church though.
Today was regular. I just goofed around like usual.
SUE did it again. Whenever I like anyone, she tears them down. When I told them about Hilca, she right away said, she’s in third grade. That’s because she’s learning English though. I hope! I ended up telling them I liked Patricia- I don’t know. No one else seems to like me. Eudardo said something about Carmen liking me but I doubt it.
G’nite

Note: I’m not sure what the launching was about, but it surprises me to see me writing that I enjoyed going to church.  I will need to check with Sue if she remembers Hilca. Carmen, I believe, was one of the girls in the neighborhood. I understand my skepticism.

Note from Sue: I don’t remember Hilca, but I do remember being very protective of my brother. I still am.

As mentioned in an earlier post, in L.A. Mom would constantly remind me, when in public, (say walking downtown), "Rich, stay with your sisters!" The '60's brought rapid change in clothing style, influenced by the latest in the US and England, and I remember when miniskirts started showing up on the downtown streets in San José. The disapproving looks from older women and the ogling and cat calls from the men. I was just coming of age and "putting two and two together", and even tho my sisters were pre-teen and certainly didn't dress provocatively, being two blonde Gringas still attracted occasional unwanted attention.

Interesting times, the maturing teenage years in L.A.

It was indeed, and I was to become aware at a fairly early age, that this was especially true in L.A. As a family, we were to attend numerous parties and social gatherings with business associates of Dad, and neighboring families; Dad was always gregarious, enjoying his "cuba libres" while discussing his job and politics, while Mom, always curious to learn the social norms by speaking with both Latina wives and a few North American wives in the mix, who were married to Latin men for many years. As we kids moved into our later teen years, we would learn that back then, in those countries, husbands often kept paramours, and that while officially condemned, it was socially "tolerated" an…
