Dear Diary:

We went to the 12th grade matinee at the Gonzalez, Missy took Becky, Simmon & I. David went with Hardgrave. I lost my voice or its very horse. I had fun. Saw the Adorable Munsters & Airport. I had these 2 kids throwing pop-corn in my mouth. I also was attack by popcorn etc. Missy came over walked etc. I ate We played tennis in the Street too. I ate supper at Missy house. We played hearts I came in 2nd 13 points total. Mr. Coverstone one 0 points. I’m spending the night.

BYE!!!

Note: The Gonzalez theater first opened in 1934 with a Lauren & Hardy movie “Fra Diavolo.” It was one of the largest theaters in Central America and was the first in Nicaragua with air conditioning and enclosed so they could show movies in the daytime. It is now an Evangelical church. I remember it having velveteen burgundy cushioned seats.

Hearts is a card game where the winner has the least amount of points. Mr. Coverston was a champion at it.

Dear Diary:

Yesterday Missy & I looked through Missy’s family pictures a huge box. I found 2 pictures of Gary Rentemly. when little. I‘m going to tease him. When I came home I took a bath & we went to church. I stayed home while rest went to C.C. for lunch. I washed my hair & typed poem Scrantina & tried to memorize it Uh 1 page & a bit typed. I went out side, Dave & Becky playing tennis with Alfredo so I played abit with him. I had the feeling he hated me & couldn't wait to leave. Well I have news for him I hate him too. Pray I know the poem.

BYE!

Note: I can’t read my handwriting to decipher the name of the poem. Both my English and Spanish teachers had us memorize poems and then recite them in class - not one of my favorite ventures but the Spanish ones always seemed easier to recite. It was supposed to be good for us.

First period a basketball game ones who graduated already against ones who haven’t 38-26 our favor, I had fun in school. I had fun math & science. We went to lab. We had punkin pie for lunch!!! I got a valentines card from Carmen Maury. Tomorrow NED & test!!! I read on “Bells on there toes” I went over to Simmons. I watched T.V. Becky didn’t go to school today sick with my cold.

Note: A jar of olives sounds like a funny gift, but my mama knew what I liked and I loved manzanilla olives; not having to share was a bonus! I still love them, especially the ones stuffed with pimentos, onions, or almonds.

The Latins really had big luxurious movie theaters...in the 60's, San Jose's best was the Rex. Two-lane streets, one for parallel parking, the other for driving. The traffic lights (when they worked) were just red and green; "Yellow" was indicated by both.

Sometime a decade or 2 ago, they closed Avenida Central to cars. It's just foot traffic now.

I didn't realize you played tennis - you mention it a lot. My brother and I would play badminton in the street in Clinton and one of us would yell Car and we would pause. Love your teen humor . That fun attitude is still a part of your essence 😊

I remember reading Bells on their Toes, too, though the details now elude me. I think it was part of a series. The olives story is a sweet reminder of what a unique mother—-and person!—-Gerrie was. One of a kind, like her daughter!

That picture of downtown Managua reminds me a LOT of downtown San Jose back in the 80's and even now - although the cars have changed (ha ha!)

I have fond memories of the streets in Costa Rica too as they were similar. I also have fond memories of working with you at PLACES Real Estate as fellow agents. SFG
