Dear Diary:
We had homeroom quide ance today second period. We got a list of courses & electives of what we want to take next year. Please pray that I pass the English test. Please don’t make Lily mad at me because I think I put my foot in my mouth. Had P.E. I bet I made a record “Worst Basketball Captain” in world. I had my tennis lesson. Hottest day on earth at least it felt like it. We went looking for sandals for Becky. Doña Mercedes is back! We went over there. Read paper. Watched T.V. did homework.

Note: Lily was a friend from class. I’m not sure what I said or if she was mad. I do remember going to family parties at her house. Her mom would have long tables covered with fillings to make your own tostadas. Tostadas are flat-fried tortillas and you add toppings of chicken, beef, and other delicacies. I had never done that before and she always had the biggest bowls of guacamole. I still love this idea.
Doña Mercedes was a most talented seamstress. She made all of our dresses and my mom’s fancy gowns. She also helped with my acne. The dermatologist wanted to put me on tetracycline and said I would have scars. My parents, fortunately, were not keen on this. Doña Mercedes told me to steam my face daily with manzanilla (chamomile) tea. It worked wonders.

Dear Diary:
School as usual. Dr. B. really looked funny today he didn’t come his hair or something similar. Mrs. Burgess came & talked to us in History about Africa. I stayed for Glee Club, just 15 mins. Cindy helped me type up the yearbook section all that I was given. We had fun although I erased alot. Missy & her mom invited me to Inter-Continental. I laughed so much. There was some American. Theye (young) talking in English thought none of us understood. It was funny. Watched T.V.

Note: Howard Hughes, movie producer, aviation pioneer, and one of the richest men in the world, lived in the Inter-Continental Hotel in Managua, Nicaragua. As a recluse, he commandeered the whole 7th floor which was blocked off to the public. The elevator would not stop on that floor; Missy and I dared each other to push the button. He escaped on his private jet soon after the earthquake later that year.

Tetracycline...yup, the go-to cure for acne in the 60's, and in higher dosages than now, along with the dermatologist's tools to pop the pimples and blackheads. Had all that done in C.R. by a German doctor that looked like Colonel Klink on Hogan's Heroes. Manzanilla tea was good with a splash of milk, but don't recall it used for acne. Shoulda' gone to the Curandera.
Mom's first job was working for TWA as a clerk in the Kansas City HQ office in the late 40's. She never formally met Howard H., but would see him frequently wandering around the facility. She said he was kinda odd even back then, and could be seen taking a nap on the sofa in…
This inspires me to look for my childhood diary. I can invision little Susie through the writings, still as kind and selfless as the woman she came to be. Thanks for sharing! -Sandy
This is so fun to read. How amazing about HH. Is the hotel still in use?
I think you and I would have been good support pals when it came to school sports! I was always near the last to be picked for teams . That hotel is huge- do you know if it is still in use? Enjoyed the blog and seeing the pictures - thanks for doing this! Debbie
