Fake fur coats for our winter vacation

January 13, 1972 Thurs.

Dear Diary:

School today!!! Lets see what happen. An earthquake in math class. Oh! I got a 66 on English test! Only 5 people passed. Oh well I beated Donald. Makes me feel good. P.E. today the last day of Basketball!!! Ya! I stayed for yearbook. We worked on our section. Already passed dead-line twice. Kim said he is going to give me a Xmas present a can for balls. I almost died! I did my homework. I’m invited to a party tomorrow. I wonder if I can go. Talked to Missy. Watched T.V. Studied for English test. Another one. Wish me luck.

BYE!!! BYE!!

Note: Once again, small earthquakes were part of our normal life.

As a teacher, I want to correct my age 14 grammar but I won’t. I cheer her on. We moved to Colombia my kindergarten year and I attended a local school. I was the only foreigner and they taught me to read and write in Spanish first, then English, and lastly French. Unfortunately, they never taught me phonics which I learned years later. My creative spelling came from sounding out words as though they were Spanish as it was the easiest for me.

January 14, 1972 Fri.

Dear Diary:

I had a English Test & Spanish tests. I hope I passed. Typing today. Anja & Lily didn't stay for Drama. It was pretty fun. We thought of what to do next. Came home on bus. The fish died yesterday. Mike came over today about fish. I went over to Simmons. Mom & Dad went out. Missy watched T.V. with us. She ate supper here. We played 1,2,3 Red light & Blinds man’s bluff. I read some on Tale of 2 Cities. Uh! Boy am I pooped. Got a letter from Mary yesterday.

BYE I got a real pretty coat (fake fur) Becky too.

Note: We never did well keeping fish alive. Mike worked with my Dad and he came over to help. The fish were in a small pond at the entrance of our house with a light illuminating them. Unfortunately, the light fell into the pond and electrocuted them all.

Mom had ordered us coats for a future winter trip to Spain. They came in handy after the December earthquake when we spent several cold weeks in Ohio with my grandparents.

Mary is my first cousin who is like my older sister.

Dear Diary:

I got up at around 9:00. Mom was out picking David & Becky for Golf. I played the piano for awhile. I read a whole bunch on “North Country Nurse”. It’s real good. I tried on some old dresses & add one of moms old belts to it & scarves & they look all different. I cleaned out a few drawers. Mom & Dad went to a party tonight. Trost’s came by. I watched T.V. I’ll read a bit. I think I’ll finish “North Country Nurse.” I finished it.

BYE!!!

Note: I still love to play around with fashion and mix things up.

Good ol' Spanish....write it like it sounds, sound it like it's written. Even works with

This is like a time capsule and I’m loving it. I was born in ‘73 :so it is neat to see what you were experiencing during that genérela time frame (won’t let me backspace for some reason to change that to “general”) ha! Love, Amanda S

Your mom looks like you in the picture of you as a baby. My mom lived to almost 90. Did yours live many more years?
