January 16, 1973 Tues.
Dear Flowers:
I got up at 9:30. We got an earlier start & we finally made it to Burger King! YUM!!! After that we went to Penny’s, Sears & finally Halles. I got a shrink. My feet killed me. All aches!!! Stoped at Grocery store. Watched T.V. Got a letter from Missy. Mom dyed my eyelashes. WHOO!!! WOW!!!
BYE!!!
Note: I must have been tired to call the diary Flowers again.
Burger King was one of our special treats. I always got a Whopper, fries, and a chocolate milkshake. I tried going back about a month ago, and it wasn’t as wonderful as I remembered. Sigh.
We went to so many stores, which was exhausting, but Mama loved to shop. Dying my eyelashes was dangerous, and I am not sure it made much difference. I think that was the one and only time she did it.
A shrink was a form-fitting sweater vest. Did any of you have one?

January 17, 1973 Wed.
Dear Smiley:
I got up early luckly!! Uncle Bill, Aunt Helen, Aunt Liz & Aunt Angela were over. After they left we went to Sears & Revco. I got some chap-lip stuff “Cherry” I got a letter from Pat. She’s in Iowa. I got a skrink! Aunt Helen & Uncle Norm were over. Watched the Bob Hope Special. Stopped using Noxema on my face. Wish me luck!! Take care of Daddy for me.
BYE!!!
Note: We were grateful to the Tinders for taking us in, but we were also so happy to be with my grandparents and family.
Bob Hope was originally from Cleveland and attended my grandmother’s school. She was always proud of that fact.
I had two Aunt Helens: Helen Metz and Helen Hughes.

January 18, 1973, Thurs.
Dear Smiley:
I got a late start today. After lunch we went to State Wholesale & mom bought electric curlers. Wow!! We then went to May Co. in Parma Town. I got an ice cream cone. Roadside -> Chocolate, vanilla, nuts & cherries!! We had stuffed pork chops. I got to call Missy. Hip-Hip-Hurrah. Watched T.V. Dad called too!!!!
BYE!!!
Note: More stores, but always fun for Mom to buy us things. What a fun day getting to talk to Missy and my Dad.
Ice cream is still one of my favorite treats.

Wed. January 16 (David’s Diary)
Look here Snoopy, I’m mad. I’ll get to that later. I got up at 7:00 in the morning. I went back to bed and got up at 9:00. I went to buy milk (ended up at Lawsons) and took Fritz for a walk. Then we went shopping. Oh, was I bored. I got 2 pairs of pants. One is in the husky size. When we got home, Becky ($!!!head) and I started to play Scrabble. We didn’t finish, as usual. She gave up. Sue scared Ma away. Saying a show was spooky and Beck left with her to watch something else. Fritz is in trouble. He tore up a tissue box and coughed up on Sue’s pillow. Reason he was confined to a small area.
I (we) also went to Burger King.
Note: More drama with my siblings. Fritz was a funny little dog, not too well-behaved. I looked out for him and often took him on walks. I remember walking to Lawsons. It felt good to buy things there and bring them ‘home’. Made me feel responsible. They had the best powdered sugar doughnut packs, which I would buy if I had an extra quarter or two.

Thursday January 17 1973 (David’s Diary)
Dear Snoopy,
Today was a pretty good day. I got up at 8:00. Ate. Watched TV. Took Fritz for a walk. I tried to teach him to lay. I visited grandpa. Mom went to the bank and store(s). Meanwhile, I helped Grandpa. Today I could say was an average day. Rymes ha? I beat Becky (fat head) twice in a row in a game of dominoes. Oh, I almost forgot. Aunt Helen called to know when Mom would be home at night, if not to call her. I forgot to tell Mom but luckily she stayed home. We watched a Christmas special of Bob Hope. I got a book called Red Man. Fritz got dog food, Sue got a shrink, Becky got pants, Becky got a book…ah the heck with it.
Note: I’m not proud of my name-calling, but I guess I felt safe confiding in my diary.

The only "shrink " I know used as a noun is for a psychiatrist! Interesting it was used as a Granny Square vest - I was a very naive teen who always wanted to be with the "in" crowd, know lingo, but I didn't know that one. I did make Granny Square items, and think actually make a blueish colored "shrink". If I ever come across a picture of mine, I'll share!
David, I hope Becky didn't take those nicknames to heart! True sibling banter 😀 My brother's name is Paul and I called him Pubs, but don't know why ! He liked to pull pranks on me and scare me, so I usually called him "Oh, You !…
Of course - now I remember having a "shrink!" My mother-in-law crotcheted it for me; it was brown, tan and gold, felt very fashionable... Never did the "ink" the eyelash thing, though I have been tempted to do it and get permanent eyeliner too.
Very cool that Bob Hope went to your grandmother's school!
I am missing all the bad weather as I am visiting my son in Hawaii. A couple weeks ago we had a brush with greatness here when we attended the Maui Pops and got to sit next to Joe Torre of NY Yankees and Atlanta Braves fame. We got to shake his hand and tell him about our trip from Hopkinsville to Atlanta to see h…
Burger King:
Returning to the States, any fast-food burger was a delicacy; back in the '60's in Latin America, juicy hamburgers just weren't a thing. Supposedly it was because there, beef cattle were strictly range fed, as opposed to grain fed here, so while ground beef was available, it was too lean to be formed into hamburger patties. For those of you who are cooks, is that a reasonable explanation? I don't know.
Shrink:
You had me going there for a minute...I've never heard of that term to describe an article of clothing.
Sibling Drama:
Nicknames: I still call Amy "Weedie". Supposedly a growth spurt as kids, Mom said she was growing "like a weed". I called Sue "Piggy" as…
Love the different diaries perspectives. -Amy
Remember the shrink! Never knew the name . Probably called it a vest.
