Diary of an Airline Brat
Managua, Nicaragua

January 4, 1972 Tues.
Dear Diary:
I had fun in school. In P.E. we were realy kidding around. I went to my tennis lesson. Ricardo was in a bad mood at beginning & I told him. These boys came to use the other court & he said they will keep coming back after they saw my figure. I lost my contact! I was sitting after tennis and I felt something on my face, my contact. I put it in my purse. The other one, I checked & gone!!! I went to Dr (skin) with Mom. Then to eye doctor. They searched my eye. I’m getting another one. 25 dollars. I came home. Talked to Missy. Saw slides.
BYE!!
Note: I had just started wearing contact lenses, and in those days, they were hard lenses. They took some time to get used to, but I was determined not to wear glasses. They were uncomfortable; dust on a windy day felt like a boulder in your eye. Sweat could wash them out. I am so grateful now for soft contacts - I can’t even feel them.
Slides were individual frames of special transparency film that Papi took of us on our trips. He often projected these pictures on a portable screen in our living room, and they were so fun to watch.

Dear Diary:
It seems like were having earthquakes. We had quite a strong one at 6 which woke me up. We have no dress code for 30 day (try out the rest of Jan.). We had an assembly at 9:05 Missed Bisbee!!! We had a fire drill. It was fun. Missed a bit of Science. I stayed for Glee Club. Boring but I need the credit for when I graduate. I washed my hair. Talked to Missy and a short while to Anja. Watched TV. David went to Boy Scots. Grandmas anniversary. 68.
BYE!!!

Note: We were having small earthquakes on a regular basis. We blamed the tremors on Momotombo, a big volcano near Managua that we were told was acting up. We thought nothing of it - it wasn’t a big deal, until it was…
Glee Club is now called Chorus at school. I sang 2nd soprano or Alto.
My Grandmother Fisch passed away on this date in 1968.

Dear Diary:
I had fun in school. No body dressed to far out only 3 girls wore hot pant. It’s the day of 3 Kings. Mom & Dad gave me another peasant blouse but pink. I stayed for yearbook. Didn’t do anything really. We went to 5:00 mass. We played with volley ball Mr. Johnson. Mrs. Burton didn’t come or something. Dad went to a stag party. I watched T.V. I read some of Boy’s Life mags. I finished yesterday “Wait for Marcy.” I read today on “Linda’s Homecoming.”
BYE!!!!!
Note: Three Kings Day (Dia de los Reyes Magos) - when the Wise Men brought gifts to baby Jesus - is celebrated in Latin America and many other places. Children received their main presents this day rather than Christmas.

I remember reading Boys Life, too, and wondering why there was not a comparable magazine for girls!
I think y'all had more earthquakes in Managua than we did in San José....due, like you say, to many active volcanos. During the 4 years we were in C.R., we only had 1 at about a 5.5 but several in the 4 range.
Slides were very common in the 50's thru 70's, before the digital age, as a way to share photos with family and friends. Good quality slides could be projected onto a 5' X 4' reflective roll-up screen in the living room. The slides themselves were only about 1.25" X 1" so an internal 500W incandescent bulb (expensive & short-lived) was required. A continually running noisy fan kept the bulb from overheating. Jammed slides in the magazines were…
How fun to read your teen goings on!
You might have lost a contact but at least you had a good figure! I love traveling back in time through your post. -Amy
When will I get to read what happened on January 7?!
