Dear Diary:
We got up early. Mrs. Zavala picked Mom & us kids & all the Hingst in one car. We sure were like sardines. We went to the market. The markets here are pretty, & not smelly! We saw I think its called “Del Carmen la Merced Church. BEAUTIFUL & the National Palace. We all had lunch with Dad at the Country Club. In the afternoon I was crabby. I finally finished “FIve were Missing” it was so good. Played shuffel board. Some kid 8 yrs. came and told us his life story almost. We kids ate by ourselves down st. at Biltmore next to our hotel. Mom & Dad at Zavalas party.
BYE!!
Note: I don’t remember Mrs. Zavala’s car, but to fit the four Hingst and four Fisches we were sardines in a can. She drove us to Antigua, south of the capital. La Iglesia of La Merced was built in1749; parts were destroyed by earthquakes over the years.
The market was so beautifully colorful and didn’t have hanging meat which always creeped me out with the smell and flies.
I loved playing shuffleboard but haven’t seen one in ages. My husband and I played several years ago in Myrtle Beach.
The book Five Were Missing by Lois Duncan was scary but good!

Dear Diary:
Mom & Dad went out with Mrs. Zavala. I read a bit on “Flying High.” I got up late this morning late for a change. I went down to the pool & we kids at lunch down their. They were all mad (Dave & Becky) cause I wouldn’t go swimming. Well thats their problem. We played a bit of shuffel board. Came up to our room 534-535 & sat waiting for Mrs. Zavala to pick us up to take us to the airport. The trip back was nice & short. Its good to be back in Nic. Lucia Sombras over but rest are still on. I got a present from Mom & Dad a painting of Rockwell.
BYE!
Note: I am not sure why Dave & Becky were mad that I didn’t swim with them. I would have rescued them if they were drowning.
Lucia Sombras was my favorite telenovela (soap opera), so I was disappointed to miss the ending. Latin American telenovelas are great in that they usually last three to six months from start to finish.
I still have the Norman Rockwell print. I met him when we were in Toledo in March of that year. Check out my post from March 25-27,1972 about my encounter with him and his wife. Serendipity!

Dear Diary:
(Well for the new few days this will not be to acurrent cause my diary was at home in the brown bag.) We went to the supermarket to get supplies for the beach house. I drove with Dad & Becky in the Ford (Dad’s car) & Mom, David & Rosa drove in the Plymoth, Mom’s car. The house has more things than last year. The bathroom upstairs is locked (we found out later by mistake). I watched T.V. All of us kids are sleeping in the last room.
BYE!!
Note: We rented the same beach house we had rented the previous year in Poneloya. Missy went with us the previous year and we swung in the hammocks they had on the veranda singing our hearts out. We especially liked to sing “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel which we had learned in Glee Club. I lost a fingernail swinging but that's another story. 😊
Rosa was our maid who came with us to help Mom.

Taking Rosa with you reminded me of when we lived in Bogotá and went to Cali on vacation, taking our maid Ana with us. Arriving downtown at a multi-story hotel, we took the elevator to our floor, and upon exiting, I heard Ana asking my sister (in Spanish) "Why did we have to go in that box that felt funny?"
It never occurred to us she had no idea what an elevator was.
Love all this! The Norman Rockwell, the afghan and the Sound of Silence! Wonderful stories!! Check out Life in 3D singing it on YouTube. https://youtu.be/nr-J7SNo9nI?si=etVWO_USovte3IW0
I forgot something - we also have a Shuffleboard connection ! My dad made one and I ended up with it! I had it at our previous home and was trying to to get 2 grans to learn to play, but they quickly turned the sticks into swords and so game was over !
I recognized the church in Antigua - so lovely and simple, yet detailed. I remember learning about the devastating volcanoes and earthquakes that affected it. If I remember correctly, this was the church through which the people would either hide or escape in when conquistadors came. But then I think the time is off - I may have totally learned and hence remembered it wrong! When I went in 1974, I took a lot of slides and tried to keep notes. When I returned in 1978, I saw earthquake devastation still from the 1976 quake - real time fear ! I never get tired of seeing Guatemalan woven items - colors are so vibrant! 😊
Every week you seem to mention something you were reading. Isn’t it wonderful what a happy part of both our lives books have been? It it weren’t for loving books, I wouldn’t have been working at the library——and I wouldn’t have met you, who loved them too. Now that is serendipity!
