Dear Diary:

17 or 16 days to go to Europe. The talent show was today & very good. 2 periods ya!!! I missed Math & English!! I stayed for Glee Club. When I came home I ate some food! What else! I talked to Missy for awhile. I did homework. I went to Simmons house & talked alot to Mrs. Metz. She’s real nice. I watched TV. Washed my hair and bleach my mostage! Sounds funny. Anyway have to study for Math.

BYE!

Note: I still love having things to look forward to and a trip to Europe was a big deal. We were going to Portugal and Spain during Semana Santa (Holy Week). Having a countdown made it more exciting.

Diary: March 1-2, 1972

March 2, 1972 Thurs.

Dear Diary:

I had a hard Math test. Uh!!! I got an 89 on the English exam! I stayed after school for typing & I did catch up a bit. Soon as I came home, almost, we went to skin doctor. He stuck a needle in my skin & he has this special gadget for taking out Blackheads. When I came home I went to Simmons for History notes I forgot & left mine at school. On the way back I saw the Isralie girl & talked to her for awhile, I watched T.V. My novelas!! I started studing at 8:00 to 9:30 for Spanish, Science, History etc.

BYE!!!

Note: I believe the dermatologist used a comedone extractor tool. My skin was pretty bad and my parents kept taking me to the skin doctor. I still believe that the solution of our seamstress Doña Mercedes - steaming my face with manzanilla tea (chamomile tea) - was what saved my complexion.

Dear Diary:

At last it’s Fri. Had a History test, I did a report in Bisbees cause when class is going to do it I won’t be here. Ya! It irony he’s the only teacher that checks our hands & desk before a test & almost everyone cheats in his class any way. Science test was not to hard easy & Spanish too. In Speed test I did 37/2. I stayed for Drama but we really didn’t get together. Watched a basketball game. When I came home read new Teen mag. A radio man here. Mom & Dad took him to Los Ranchos. Watched T.V. Going to beach tomorrow.

BYE!!!

Note: I remember Dr. Bisbee always checking our hands and desks. As a high school teacher in the 90’s I found that students were very creative in their ways of cheating. I often found cheat sheets hidden in girls' big hair, on the bottom of their shoes, their hands, or just looking at other classmates' papers. On test days, I usually stood at the back of the classroom and tried to wear shoes that didn’t squeak. This way, they didn’t know where I was. I am sure many did get away with it but I tried to make it more challenging.

Los Ranchos was our favorite steak restaurant. They were known for their churrasco steak with delicious chimichurri sauce which consists of lots of parsley and garlic. I can still remember how good it was. They have a restaurant now in Miami too.

Being a ham radio operator, my dad made friends all over the world. Operators from other countries would visit and sometimes stay with us for a few days.

C.R. had great steaks, cheap too. Maybe the same throughout L.A. I was told it was because the cattle were grass fed rather than grain fed. It did make for some tough meat tho.

Ah, there's a pic of those torture instruments for acne. Dang near as bad as mom's fingernails.

Oh Susie - how I do remember Los Ranchos! No better steak house and none that have the chimichuri sauce... They also served a sour cream sauce with jalapeños. Do you remember that? Los Ranchos in Miami is good too... Wonder if there are other skin conditions that manzanilla tea helps as well? Looking forward to your trip to Europe! Abrazos Tootsie

Hi Tootsie! I vaguely remember the sour cream sauce. The chimichurri is what I remember vividly! Thanks for reading my posts and hope you are enjoying Hawaii!❤️

“I also know that my mama always said to have broad shoulders!” What an awesome quote and concept/visual. Your mama was wise! Love, Amanda S
