Dear Diary:
I guess I’ve told you about Claire how I’ve started to dislike her. All she does is brag about oh this boy, likes me & that boy etc. I never here the end of Yadayada. Oh! Guess what we have to do for a composition on Mon. for English. “Should a girl still be a virgin when she marries give reasons for or against.” Its for our sex maniac dirty old man Bisbee!!! I stayed for Drama. We worked on my part in gypsy seen. I went over to Missy’s. I’m going to spend the night.
BYE!!
Note: I wish I had a copy of my composition as I would have loved to see what I wrote. It still feels inappropriate to have asked us to write about such a personal matter.

Dear Diary:
Robbers tried to get in Missy’s room last night but didn’t. I went to dressmaker. I’m getting a real pretty dress. I ate Missy’s. Gisela came & took us to the Paneria Alemana. I thought were going on a tour but it ended that we worked at the counter. I‘ve never been so bored for 5 hours!!!! On the way back a car of boys followed us cause I dared Missy to wave at them & she did. Coverstons stayed for awhile.
BYE!!
Note: That night around 1:00 a.m. Missy and I woke up hearing someone trying to open the jalousie windows. We saw a man’s shadow. Missy told me not to move or speak. I whispered that I had to go to the bathroom and she said, “NO! Go in the bed!” I said, “I won’t!” I didn’t listen and tiptoed to the adjoining bathroom and turned the light on, scaring the potential burglar away.
Panaderia Alemana is German bakery.

Dear Diary:
Well I never finished Maria on page 220. Well I wrote the report anyway & I will read the rest on trip. Becky made a chocolate cake Uhm!! We had beef stroganoff for lunch. I went to church alone. Mom, Becky & Dav went last night. After mass we all went to Coverstones. Mrs. Coverston’s birthday. I studied alot for History.
BYE!!!!!
Note: Mrs. Coverston always called Missy and me “Mutt and Jeff” from an old comic strip. I was tall and Missy was short.

I suspect most of us were victims of burglary down there at least once...unlike military brats in gringo enclaves, with night watchmen, we were hit numerous times in C.R. & Colombia. You'd think going off leaving the maids to watch the house would be fine, but they always claimed to not hear anything, with their door closed and radio going. Even at night, with us all there, we had a few stealth burglaries. What did they take? Small kitchen appliances. In Colombia, we had to pay for "guard service" (actually "protection money").
Colombian crime was more dangerous than in C.R., where armed crime was rare. In Colombia, dad kept a gun handy. This was Bogotá tho. I wonder if it…
That teacher wouldn't have a job anymore in today's world! Love reading about your feisty, fun teenage years- you saved the sleepover😁
The essay assignment was totally inappropriate. To your knowledge did any of your classmates ,or their parents bring this to the administration's attention ?
Oh my goodness, Dr. Bisbee changed a lot since the classes I had with him!! He stuck to Don Quijote and Dulcinea during my time in his classes.
Love seeing the pictures of you and my little sister Missy😍.
In the picture of Mom greeting President Somoza, Marge and Tony Skinner (also with the Tabacalera) were right there looking on. Thanks so much Susie for sharing your memories! Tootsie
Your diary is like a telegram - short and sweet! Love the picture. And whoa, that essay assignment? Ugh...
