Dear Smiley:
Happy Saint Patricks Day. We got our typhoid shots & polio drops today. Read on “Cousin Kate.” We picked Doris up & went to Diana’s party. It was pretty good. We had to pass the orange. I did it with Bill Chance. Then the guys picked slips of paper & then they were girls master for ½ hr. Tied together by wrist. I got Donald Gaitan. I danced with him. Mom & Dad at Hingst party. Went outside.
BYE!!!
Note: It’s ironic that I mention getting our polio drops in this entry. I had a CarT transplant 6 years ago, and it erased all of my previous vaccines. It has taken me a long time to replace all of my vaccines. Yesterday I got my second dose of the polio vaccine. I have one more in 6 months, and alleluia, I will be caught up. It is not easy getting vaccines as an adult!
This game of guys being masters to girls sounds "no bueno", but to be honest, I don’t remember playing it. I am sure I would have written about it in more detail if something inappropriate had happened.

Dear Smiley:
We went to church & super. I had a frozen datacari. We had squared hamburgers for lunch. I washed my hair & Mom put it in pin-curls. I put a scarf over it. Mom dyed my eye lashes. Doris was over for abit. Read on “Cousin Kate.” Spagatti for supper. I finished Cousin Kate (Spooky!)
BYE!!!
Note: I had a frozen daiquiri minus the rum.
Mom would roll my hair around her finger in a tight curl and pin it with a bobby pin. I could sleep more comfortably than with the hard brush curlers.
I still had some of the eyelash dye kit from the U.S. I am not sure it made a difference, but I felt like it did.
Cousin Kate by Georgette Heyer was a Gothic romance that explored family dynamics, mysteries, and the treatment of mental illness in the Regency period.

Dear Smiley:
School!!! I brought an excuse for gym (my typhoid shot). She’s having you do handstands into a forward roll. I hear that Lydias party was a success!!! Simone was sent to the office by Mr.Sanchez. She’s paying for it (not coming to complain about it). I watched T.V. Mr. & Mrs. Hoar were over. Went to get some pills at Drugstores. Read newspapers.
BYE!!!
Note: Simone had backed out of going with us to complain about Mr.Sanchez, and now she probably regretted it.

Snoop, I’m tired and I don’t feel like writing. I went to Diana’s party. To me it was a flub Boy Scouts was alright. Allen, Eric and I were the only ones in uniform. Norm, Joe and Troop played football.
Got tetanus shots today.
Sue’s feeling sorry for herself. She says she’s 15 and has no boyfriend. Give her time.
‘Night
I’ve got to read “El Niño de la Bola
Note: I enjoyed reading my thoughts regarding Susie writing “Give her time”!
El Niño de La Bola is a tragic novel about a boy who was left an orphan after his dad committed suicide. He falls in love with a girl whose father led to his dad’s downfall. It’s a tragic story, and I have to wonder why it was on my required reading list!

March 18, 1973 Sun. (David’s Diary)
Dear Snoop.
Not much happened today. Played Dad 4 games or five games of chess. We’re tied. I wonder if I’ll ever read El Niño de la Bola. Doris and Gordon came over with their dog Sport. At night I went out with Beck but there was no game. I don’t like it too much anyways. To me, talking is first easier with Americans, 2 with Nic. Like Sylvia , Blanca, But talking to Cynthia or to Carmen is impossible.
Tomorrow, I’d better read that book.
GOOD
NIGHT
Note: It’s a nice memory remembering playing chess with my dad. I still enjoy playing. By Nic. I meant Nicaraguans. No idea why talking with Cynthia or Carmen was impossible.

Funny I'm reading about your vaccinations you had in 1973, because they ask of them for 1st year students at UTK. Well...I've gotta check about that tomorrow. Nothing knocked mine out but do I still have to produce 45+ years later? Time will tell!
So many memories - talking about vacinations - while in Mexico our mother had to smuggle in our polio shots. At the time Mexico did not have them and the company doctor had a contact in El Paso - so Kathie went and got enough for us and the doctor's children.
And of course the awkward party games - have clear memory of playing spin the bottle and kissing a boy on the lips for the first time, at Peter and Paul Hoar's house at Colonia Dombach. Not sure of spelling? The boy I "had" to kiss was Terry Berg... I must say pulling a boy around on a leash seems weird even for today, much less back then!
Nice…
15 and no boyfriend? Good Lord, this is a crisis!! A call for social justice!!
An interesting thing to me is the extent to which y'all were always getting vaccinations. I remember we had to have several before travelling to C.R., but once there, I don't remember getting any. We may have needed a few when we moved to Colombia, but again, once there, I don't remember getting any beyond that. It may be that, being a PanAm family, and PanAm being so international, they made sure all their international families were protected with the latest vaccine protocols. I guess it's a wonder we never got anything more serious than the occasional case of the trots while living there🤪
Funny...in David's diary he mentions "Allen, Eric and I". I'm sure he is referring to Alan Ludeking, and probably myself (Eric Matheu). Could not think of any other Eric's. Do y'all remember an Eric Stone...that name is sticking in my head?
I'm really puzzled by the idea of dying your eyelashes. It sounds dangerous to me. Was it? It reminds me of my older sister trying to straighten her hair with a clothes iron on the ironing board. I wonder what else could be included in a list of risky beauty practices 🤔...
