Dear Diary:

School as usual. 8 more days. Today was my lucky day. I got a 91 on English test. I had lots of people sign my autograph book. Everyones or most said how good natured I was & how I always smile. If they only know. I went to the Dr’s with Missy for her to get her measle shot. Missy stayed for supper. I got an eye infection or something & can’t open my eyes. Can’t see!

Note: I always had a calendar that I would count down with an X each day as we got closer to the end of school. I also took great joy in doing it again years later as a teacher.

My parents only bought one yearbook for us to share. My solution was an autograph book. I had friends and teachers sign it.

The yearbook turned out nice! We spent many hours trying to make it look good.

Dear Diary:

I still couldn’t see this morning. Dad fixed it with these drops. A big relief!!! I read newspapers. I finally finished “Kerry” I started to read “Exit Betty” Missy came over and we made invitations. We made 11 including for us by mistake!! I watched T.V. Patridge Family & Brady Bunch it was good.

Note: My grandfather was a great doctor. My Dad instinctively knew what to do for medical issues but was quick to get us medical attention if needed. Interesting note, my Dad was in medical school following his Dad’s footsteps till they started working on cadavers. After that, he changed his career goals and didn’t eat meat for a year.

Looks like Missy agreed to have a goodbye party.

Exit Betty was another book by Grace Livingston HIll

Dear Diary:

Send Carmen Maury a Birthday card. Went to church. Then we went supermarket. Mothers day. Dad gave mom a purse in a box about 8 ft by 8 ft. I gave her eyeliner. David some wash-dri, Becky some cold cream. I bought in the super some polish for moms birthday the 25. We took the Coverstones to lunch. Mrs. Coverstone didn’t go sick. Did homework. Pray I get out History, Spanish, English & Science test semester. PLEASE!! Watched T.V. Talked to Missy.

BYE!!!

Note: Carmen Maury was my special friend from Barranquilla, Colombia. We were in school together from second to fourth grade. She moved back to Illinois. I would love to get in touch with her again. We stayed in contact until our early twenties. I would love to know where she lives now.

Dad loved to add the element of surprise with his gifts. If he gave you something small, he would wrap it in a huge box with a brick to add weight.

I hope you find your friend. My college roommate moved from her home town and I had given up trying to find her. Then one day out of the blue she sent me a card with her new address. They had one child so they followed him to Williamsburg, VA. She finally wrote me and now we write and call each other on regular basis.

I am glad you found your friend and are staying in touch. What fun it is to be connected with friends from our past. I hope I find her too.

I very much like the picture of your friend Carmen. For such a young person, she looks serious and contemplative, like a girl in a Victorian portrait. It would be wonderful if she found her way to this blog—-or it found its way to her!—-and you could reconnect. Fingers crossed!

I say those comments in your autograph book were spot on and hold true today! You were and are a wonderful person and friend🤗 Autograph books and yearbooks are great to look back on, bring back memory moments and reveal true thoughts ( although many are just polite, silly and traditional). I recall one boy wrote in my yearbook that he always thought I was stuck up because I was shy and serious and that he wished he could have known me better and talked to me. My teen heart hurt, yet was touched by the fact that one of the cool kids thought of me! I recall my mom writing in an autograph book I took to church camp: By…
