Dr. Bisbee
Dr. Harold Leslie Bisbee, my English teacher

May 15, 1972 Mon.

Dear Diary:

School. It wasnt such a nice today. It rained for the first time this year really. I had I.Q. test for an hour today. Tiny bit of Math. Than English. After English assembly our last assembly! Glee Club (me too) We sang.  A bit of Spanish. I got a 96 on test Fri. & all of Science. It poured all day. Went to eye doctor. Watched T.V. Did homework. Pray I get out of Science & History & English. PLEASE!!! I beg you.

BYE!

Note: When it would rain it would often come out of nowhere and could be very local. Dr. Bisbee, my English teacher, was always prepared for either the extreme heat or rain with a special jungle hat that looked like it came from an old Tarzan movie.

I considered my diary to be a special friend with secret powers.

May 16, 1972 Tues.

Lets see. I had P.E. It rained or drizzled through whole class so I got wet. Test in science tomorrow. I.Q. test this morning. Math was hard in them. I got Ricardo, Becky Oscar today. Ha Ha! Balbino took us. When I handed Oscar the money he sorta took my hand. I took it back quick. Uh! He gives me the creeps. I watched T.V. Did homework. Studied hard for Science. Mom & Dad went out. I studied till 10:30. Wish me luck.

BYE!!

Note: Ricardo and Oscar were brothers and were our tennis teachers. I'm glad I listened to my inner voice.

Dear Diary:

Science test was hard. Let see. In English we reviewed for Uh! Test tomorrow. No Glee Club today so no more classes for it for this school year yeah!!! It rained alot yesterday. Missy came over. Walked over to Simmons. Watched T.V. Studied for English. I have to get a good grade!! Help me. Missy’s dad picked her up. Studied. Uh! I'm tired.

BYE!!!

Note: Mrs. Currin was an excellent music teacher and I liked to sing. My problem was she had me singing either second soprano or sometimes alto and I didn’t feel confident with either one as I didn’t read music.

I always liked Mrs. Currin. Her class was one of my favorites! Such a nice lady and good teacher. As an adult now, I wish I’d known my teachers better.

I wish I had too! I believe she settled somewhere in North Carolina.

I found some things about Dr. Bisbee online. I never realized he married at 60 years old a Nica in 1972 just before the earthquake. Graduated Suma Cum Laud in 1932 from Harvard! Nice picture of him as a young man. If I figure out how, I’ll try to send you the screenshots. I wasn’t much fond of him as a teacher, but I was a 14 yo brat. And not terribly intelligent.

Nice to see both Mrs. Currin and Dr. Bisbee - two very different types of people for sure. Her husband was named Buck - do you remember who he worked for?

Dr. Bisbee lived at the Lido Hotel downtown Managua. Think he also taught Spanish Literature - spoke Spanish like a Spaniard and loved Don Quixote, Miguel Unamuno +++ An odd thing I remember about him was how he crossed his legs - do you rememeber that Susie? Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Tootsie

Where was Mr. Bisbee from? He appears to be wearing a British Colonial pith helmet! It makes me wonder if he also had a kongoni skin spine pad!!!

I believe he was originally from Mass. He probably did have a kongoni skin spine pad. He definitely was different.
