Dear Diary:
Mom woke me up at 7:30. We went to Masaya. I bought Becky a present for Mom: Tamaringos I I think you call them. Uh! I hate Masaya. Hot, smelly dirty & everything. I ate early. Lights went out. Went to school for Glee Club. Oh no more school. We leave to Ohio June 5th my birthday. Missy leaves for good the1st. It was funny a few girls & I were talking in the bathroom & Jimmy Reyes sticks his head in (almost) & says something & I go calling him a peeping tom etc. Tomorrow is Moms birthday.
BYE!
Note: Mom always woke us up singing a few verses from Irving Berlin’s “Oh how I hate to get up in the morning.” I always wanted five more minutes. I would love to hear her sing it now. I often woke my boys by singing it or I played a loud Bob Marley song.
Masaya was a marketplace that sold all sorts of artisan wares. It has been revamped since then. I bought maracas (also known as tamaracas) for Mom’s birthday.

Dear Diary:
Moms birthday. She opened her present last night. She got another Guatemalan purse, 2 bottles of nail polish, flower stickers, tamaringos & earring. 4 arrangements of flowers from Dad. I got up at 6:00 & went with Dad. He dropped me off at school. We went to Radio Juvenil. Its beautiful. Loads of guys with afroes. They wrote down our names, ages, year of Birth sign, address were we where born etc. We sang in a tiny sound proff room & we had to take our zapatitos off go in carpeted. The piano was in a different room. Missy stayed for lunch. Lights went out for 3 hours.

Note: This was Mom’s 45th birthday. I can’t remember if we had a cake for her but we sang to her and she seemed to like everything.
Radio Juvenil was the big radio station and it felt like an honor to sing our Glee Club songs.
Zapatitos - means small shoes.
We often had power outages in Managua. Fortunately we had gas stoves for cooking and we were careful not to open up the refrigerator/freezer.

Dear Diary:
I got to sleep to 10:00! Lets see I read 2 Boy’s Life mag & some stories from Alfred Hitchcock. Talked to Mom. Ate lunch. Packed my bag for swimming, while Dave & Becky had lessons. Missy & I went swimming. Becky came when her lesson was done. Oh we had fun. Quite a few guys there. We sure got our shares of looks. Roberto Cazares & See-hafer kid were there. There in Dave’s class. I watched T.V. I put a new hem in mom’s (now mine) pants. In 10 days I‘m 15 & going to Ohio. June 5. Gisela was at pool.
BYE!!!
Note: I loved to swim at the Nejapa Country Club with its beautiful pool. Gisela Ruegsegger was a good friend from Switzerland. I would love to locate her, if anyone knows how to contact her.
Dave and Becky had golf lessons, which I didn’t care for. The instructor told me I looked like I was doing the cha cha. I stuck with tennis lessons.

Dad always sang:
"Lazy bones,
Sleepin' in the sun,
When ya gonna get your day's work done?"
Interesting you had a "Radio Juvenil" We did too, in Costa Rica. I wonder if it was the same company? They played a wide mixture of pop/rock from the states, Brazil, Spain, all over really.
I had a small transistor radio, and at night, would put it under my pillow after lights out. During the day it was at low volume, otherwise we heard: "Turn that noise off!"
This was fun!!! My mother always woke us up with the words, “Rise and Shine!!!!” I’m curious about your blog…who is your blog host?? Do you have to pay? I’m impressed! Julie
Well, I love the way your Mom woke you up. The end of school antics seem the same world wide! I always enjoy your stories. You were very dedicated to your daily entries.

You know I love seeing cultural souvenirs! Of all the ones I got from Guatemala, I never did get myself a pocketbook! My daughter has several that she got as gifts. Now you can buy them without even going to the countries, but that's not as special, is it? Interesting that you read Boys' Life magazines - Mark used to read them as a youth. Tried to get a few grandsons interested, but to his dismay they weren't as much as he was! Your mom kept her good looks from the photos you posted from time in TN. I wish I could have met her- I'm sure I would have liked being around her😊
Good read! Mama usually just spoke to us that it was time to get up!
