Dear Flowers:
Tomorrow is Simmons birthday. David’s still gone till mañana! I read papers. Talked to Pat. Went for our tennis lessons. We swam. Its cold out .Becky's spending the night at Lisas. Hope she has fun. I’m a only child today. I got a letter from Missy. I got a new pair of pants: purple. Read on Mrs. Mike & T.V. Got a young miss.
BYE!!
Note: What fun to be an only child for a night and a new magazine. Life was good! Young Miss was my favorite magazine along with Teen. I don’t remember my purple pants, but I bet they were cool. I still love purple as those who know me now will attest!

Dear Flowers:
Fumegators came this morning at 8:00 so Mom and I went & got our hair rolled. Mrs. Burgess did my hair. We went to Masaya. Becky & I got some smocks. (I call them maternity blouses). Read on “Mrs. Mike.” I went & gave Simmon her present. Sopresa someone added my good necklace to it so goodbye necklace. Mom took me to the C.C. Went swimming. Alfredo was their & as usual I made a fool of myself. I said hi waving & splashed him) Seehafers brought us home. Daves & Becks back.
BYE!
Note: The smocks were embroidered with beautiful bright flowers and tied in back.
Mrs. Gretta Burgess was the mother of my classmates Michelle and Mark Burgess. She was beautiful and I thought she was so sophisticated. She had a salon in her house and rolled my hair. She convinced me months later to cut my hair short and it looked stunning!
Sopresa means Surprise!

September 14, 1972 Thurs.
Dear Flowers:
Slepted in to about 11:00. Ate. Worked on my English report on “Mrs. Mike.” I finished it last night. After lunch I finished the report. Went to Simmons to give her some books back. Watched T.V. Some stewardess’s were here. Mom & Dad are taking them out to dinner. Finished “Coloquio de los Perros” AL FIN!!!
BYE!!
Notes: Mrs. Mike describes the life of a young woman in the Canadian wilderness after marrying a Mountie.
I believe one of the stewardesses was Kathy McGrath who, along with her flight engineer husband Bob McGrath, became good friends of my parents.
We were home from school because of Nicaragua's Independence day on the 15th.
Do you remember embarrassing moments as a teen? I sure had a lot of them!

Felicidades Abuela! Or will you be called "Nana"? Or will you be called whatever she calls you?
Embarrassing moments were many as a teen...humiliating, better said. I still remember one in particular. First year in Bogotá, new school, I was barely 15, the only gringo in the class. By then, some of the boys had nicknamed me "carip - - - a", (a common epithet in Colombia.). I'd come back from recess, plopped down in my seat, immediately felt stabbing pains in my butt, jumped back up, to find numerous thumbtacks had been carefully taped to my seat. Snickering ensued from the Pinilla brothers in the back row, the other kids taking their lead, began snickering as well. A lum…
Yes. The embroidered smock. In home economics in high school, we well my Mama, found a pretty fabric with pre done embroidery and I was able to make a dress in class.
Congratulations on your upcoming grandchild! This is happy news! You and Eric will certainly be great at grand parenting . Stay well my friend. Mg
Susan,
Funny… until you mentioned purple pants, I forgot I had a lavender pair. I remember those smocks, too, and yes they were like maternity tops.
Have fun with the baby shower! You’ll make a great Nana!

What a lovely picture of your lovely mother——in purple! Unsurprisingly, I also read Mrs. Mike.
