Dear Flowers:

Went to church. My eye’s a tiny bit swollen. Went to super. Watched T.V. We spent the day (afternoon) at the See-hafer. We had fun. Played Crocket. I lost every time!!! I swang on the swing. Barb-Q supper Yum!! I’m real tired. YAWN so good night

BYE!!

Note: It’s funny how we hyper focus on things that no one would ever notice (my swollen eye). I love my creative spelling of croquet. I guess I was a good sport losing every time and still thinking it was fun.

Dear Flowers:

I got 100 on Spanish!!! 82 on Math & a B in P.E. Average in P.E. a B. YA!!! I got a crush on Julio I think. In science he took a note I had written to Pat away & tried to read it. I chased him all over Science. He passed it to Steve & Jorge Mata! I got it back with a struggle. Stayed after for Drama. We're from Monkey Land EKKEKK! Came home on bus. Outlined Science abit. Got to do English. Wish me luck. I got 3 letters! 2 Missy, 1 Mary.

BYE!!

Note; Funny just a few weeks ago I had a crush on Roberto. I was pretty fickle.

Passing notes to girlfriends is a risky business. You have the danger element of the teacher catching you and reading it to the class or mischievous boys having fun with it.

How exciting to get 3 letters in one week!

Diary September 25-26, 1972

September 26, 1972 Tues.

Dear Flowers:

School! I got B- average in English. I hope to make the honor roll!!! Gisela came home with me. Had tennis lesson. Really made us run!!! El Loco was at the C.C. bowling. We were walking (Gisela & me) up stair by Bowling alley & boys whistle!!! I got into a conversation with Renni Renfro & it ended up on sex!!! Went swimming. Had fun. Did homework Watched T.V. Outlined on History. Got 8 pages to go Wish me luck!!! Test Thurs. PRAY I don’t get a cold!

BYE!!

Note; I love how I jumped from having a conversation about sex, dropping that thought and talking about swimming and watching TV. It must not have been too serious.

I wish I could remember who “El Loco” was as I mention him often. El Loco translates to being crazy.

I love these entries! I admire your consistency. I found my old diary as I was clearing things from storage. I think HS is the only time I kept at it. I found some of ur old letters in April. I’ll see if I can retrieve any. To this day I love sending letters. Can’t tell you how many I tossed ( I had kept them ALLLLLLL ) looking forward to ur next entries. ❤️ ps so cool that you found Irene in Tennessee 😃

Well, Susan, you might have been fickle, but looks like Julio was cute. Unlike you, I had a secret crush on one guy named Larry for years! I remember whenever a new student came to our international school in Chile, a lot of students would have a crush on them just because they were new

When we talk, I want to hear about this Larry, haha.

Yes, there was always a lot of interest and crushes on new students.

I loved getting Air Mail ! It's amazing how a letter or phone call can suddenly shorten distances in our minds and hearts. A text, email, Facebook are tech advances that do the same and it blows my mind when I pause and think about that!

I still treasure getting letters and cards in the mail. Emails and texts are great but there is something special about opening an envelope and reading and re-reading a notes. They make me smile!

Gee, I dunno.....must have been serious enough to merit 3 exclamation points!!! The details were just too juicy for the diary!!!

Yeah, at that age, events happen every day to merit 3 exclamations points, especially for girls, who are naturally more empathetic and socially aware than boys. (I give thanks to my 2 sisters, who lectured....oops...."Enlightened" me on these matters).

Like y'all, having grown up abroad and looking back, we came to realize that the growing pains of adolescence are not bound by geography....the language is different, the customs are different, but the emotions are all the same.

And like y'all, we didn't live in the gringo military neighborhoods, with their commissary privileges and all-English-language schools, and all-gringo friends. We…

Hi Rich! I always look forward to your comments as you are so insightful. I just spoke with my friend Tootsie and she loves your comments as well.

I don't remember getting peanut butter in Managua so when we did go to the U.S. to visit my grandparents that was always a treat for us. We would have peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwiches.

I still love them!

What a shame you didn’t preserve some of the notes from those years; now THAT would have been

extremely interesting!
